Interpersonal & Family Communication focuses on personal relationships and family communication. Faculty approach research from a broad methodological and theoretical base and regularly work with students in research teams. Faculty are involved in the college's multi-disciplinary Family Research and Policy Initiative and the Nebraska Center for Children, Family and the Law, working along with scholars in sociology, psychology, and family studies.

870 Interpersonal CommunicationIntroduction to the central concerns of interpersonal communication theory and research, and to the various approaches to issues in the interpersonal communication context. Intended for students who have had two or more previous courses in interpersonal communication and who want to pursue in-depth theory, research, and pedagogy in interpersonal communication.
885 Small Group Communication TheoryThis course is designed to sketch out the conceptual territory of small group communication via a review of small group communication literature. The course will focus on small group communication as displayed in the family, friendship, and organizational networks. Students with little or no theoretical background in the small group communication area can develop an integrative picture of how small groups operate in various interpersonal settings.
950A Seminar in Gender and CommunicationAn investigation of the relationship between gender and communication. Theories and research on gender and communication are explored, and serve as the basis for studying the interrelationships among language, social reality, sex role stereotypes, and cultural values.
970A Seminar in Interpersonal CommunicationA critical examination of fundamental concepts, theories, and research in interpersonal communication. Selected problems and contemporary research will be emphasized.
970B Seminar in Family Communication (3cr) Prereq: PermissionFundamental concepts, theories, and research in family communication. Selected problems and contemporary research across a variety of family contexts.
970D Current Research in Interpersonal CommunicationThis course surveys current research in interpersonal communication. Emphasis is upon issues, direction, and methodology in interpersonal communication.
