Advising Procedures

Majors (Click on majors for handbook)

The following procedures should help you make the most of the communication studies advising process.

  1. To declare a Communication Studies major, obtain a declaration of major form from the College of Arts and Sciences office, 107 Oldfather. (If changing major, students need to retrieve their file from their previous adviser.)
  2. You should meet with the advisor early in your program to discuss and file a program of study. Regular meetings with a departmental advisor are strongly encouraged.
  3. Keep your undergraduate guide because this will aid you and your advisor in working out semester schedules.
  4. Complete a degree audit form after you have completed 89 credit hours. This form is needed for the Credential Office to verify that you have fulfilled your major requirements for graduation. After completion of the senior check, you need to complete the degree audit.

Minors (Click on minors for handbook)

The following procedures should help you make the most of the communication studies advising process.

  1. To declare a Communication Studies minor notify your academic adviser.
  2. You should discuss with your academic adviser which would be best suited to your program of study either a Plan A (18 hour minor-stand alone) or Plan B (12 hour minor which must be coupled with another 12 hour minor).
  3. You should meet with the Communication Studies adviser early in your program to discuss a curricular emphasis for your minor. Regular meetings with your advisor are strongly encouraged.
  4. Keep this undergraduate guide because this will aid you and your adviser in working out semester schedules and to ensure you are taking all the appropriate courses to complete your minor.

If you have any address or telephone changes, please notify the office. This will help to keep our mailing lists up to date and to keep you informed of any activities.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

High School seniors who are applying for admission should contact the Office of Admissions regarding application for freshman scholarships and all deadlines. For federal aid, student and parent(s) must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA), (click on the link) or also available from your high school guidance counselor.

Current UNL students should contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid to make sure they have applied for all appropriate scholarships and financial aid. In addition, the College of Arts and Sciences administers scholarships. Information about these College scholarships, deadlines, and the College's Undergraduate Scholarship Application Form is available in the Arts and Sciences Advising Center, 107 Oldfather.
