> Jay Keasling (Beta Tau, 1986) a professor of chemical engineering, bioengineering, and synthetic biologist at the University of California, Berkeley was named Scientist of the Year (2006) by the international science magazine, Discover. Keasling is the Director of the Synthetic Biology Engineering Research Center Berkley. His work in genetics, manipulating genes and working with artificial DNA has be honored. He was also awarded a $42.6 million Gates Foundation grant in December of 2004 to create breakthrough technology to produce a cure for malaria that will be inexpensive enough to benefit the poor all over the world. Keasling hopes that the drug will be available in 2009, part of his passion to help society and the environment. Keasling said about his time in Beta Tau, “I was in Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, and I have great memories of that.”

Congratulations to Brother Keasling on this amazing

recognition! From the March 2007 edition of The Rainbow.
