Advising Expectations

     At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, it is our expectation that all students will be successful. Students work closely with their academic advisers, as well as faculty and resource staff to establish their education plan. Ongoing interaction and communication between students and their academic adviser is essential for academic success.

An Academic Adviser will:

• Protect and secure the integrity of the UNL degree by enforcing all University and departmental policies and requirements.
• Understand and effectively communicate the curriculum, graduation requirements and University and college policies and procedures in order to provide helpful and appropriate advisement and mentoring.
• Be available, approachable, personable and demonstrate concern for and interest in students.
• Assist students in working closely with appropriate university staff and faculty.
• Make appropriate referrals within the University and encourage advisees to develop skills that will lead to self-responsibility.
• Have respect for each individual student and serve as a model of the educated person.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records.

An Advisee will:

• Display respect for the adviser and have a positive attitude toward the advising process.
• Meet the adviser at appropriate times and come to advising sessions prepared to assume responsibility for degree planning.
• Clarify personal values and goals and provide adviser with accurate information regarding academic interests and abilities.
• Seek to become acquainted with the academic structure of the University.
• Become knowledgeable about college programs, policies, and procedures and utilize available University resources and services.
• Ask questions to better understand an issue or a specific concern.
• Keep a personal record of progress toward obtaining academic goals.
• Accept responsibility for decisions and actions (or inactions) that affect educational progress and goals.
