Selecting First Year Courses

Academic advisers work with students to choose first year courses. Most of the courses we recommend to first year students are general education classes. The general education program at UNL is called ACE (Achievement Centered Education). The ACE program consists of 10 learning outcomes that all students must fulfill during their academic career at UNL. Students must successfully complete one three-hour course for each outcome. Deciding students usually finish 9 of the 10 outcomes during their first year. The ACE program is a 30 hour program. General Studies students focus on ACE until they decide a major.

Students must complete one three hour course for each outcome.  A course may be on two outcome lists but a course will only apply to one outcome.

During the first year advisers also encourage students to enroll in exploration courses . These are the beginning courses in each of UNL's majors. For example, CRIM 101 is the exploration course for students considering Criminal Justice as a major. We want students to try courses in subjects in which they have an interest to learn if the major is a good fit.
