The SI/UTAC Program
Supplemental Instruction is a non-remedial, institution-wide approach to retention. Developed by Deanna C. Martin, Ph.D. at the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1973, Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program that increases student performance and retention. The SI program provides regularly scheduled (usually three or four times a week) out-of-class study/review sessions facilitated by an undergraduate student leader who has previously received an "A" in the course. These sessions are completely voluntary and free to any students enrolled in the course section. The sessions customarily begin the second week of the semester and continue through the week before final examinations.
Since 2004, SI leaders have been designated UTAC (Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Corps) leaders. Their function has not changed, but they are selected by faculty members for their courses rather than by student application and selection by SI staff.
