Knowing where to begin the process involved in choosing a major can be confusing. Here are some tips for getting started:

  • Complete a self-assessment to clarify your interests and skills (contact a career counselor in Nebraska Union room 230, 472-3145, (http://www.unl.edu/careers/explore/).
  • Review the current Undergraduate Bulletin to learn about majors, courses and requirements.
  • Talk with faculty and students in academic areas of interest.
  • Take an introductory course in an academic interest (Exploration Course List).
  • Become involved in student organizations or volunteer for activities related to your interests.
  • Conduct an informational interview with or shadow a professional in your career area of interest.  You can set this up through the Career Services' "Guided Professional Shadowing" (GPS) program PPN is a NEW Program Fall 2011(402 472-3145).
  • Meet with an academic adviser to learn more about the curriculum related to a major and/or interest (contact a General Studies adviser in Canfield #33, (402 472-3605).
