Why Start UNL Career in DGS

Many university students change their major several times during the course of their academic career. In the Division of General Studies, we believe that students who begin college undeclared are wise to take advantage of the opportunity to explore majors and career options during their first year at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

  • Assurance That Courses Will Apply: DGS advisers will encourage you to take exploratory courses in the academic areas that are of interest but still keep you on track with eventual degree requirements. Many exploratory courses are also ACE courses. Thus students can explore majors while meeting all-university general education requirements.
  • One Stop Shopping Advising Convenience: Rather than seeing a number of advisers for all the programs that are of interest, you can see ONE General Studies adviser for all of your academic needs and questions
  • Welcoming Environment: General Studies also has a freshman Learning Community. The Learning Community offers you an opportunity during your first semester to have and take classes with other undeclared students.
