We study the physics of the interactions of ultra-intense and ultrashort-pulse-duration light with plasmas, using the highest laser fields ever produced in the laboratory.  Scientific applications include relativistic nonlinear optics and ultrafast science. Technological applications include compact sources of ultrashort-duration x rays or energetic particles.
