 6. NSF STEP - Call for Preproposals

Call for Pre-Proposals - Deadline: Nov. 16, 2005. NSF Science,
Technology, Engineering & Mathematics Talent Expansion Program
(STEP) Grants 2006. The Office of Research & Graduate Studies has
announced the call for Pre-Proposals for the NSF STEP program.
(STEP) Grants 2006. The Office of Research & Graduate Studies has
announced the call for Pre-Proposals for the NSF STEP program.
Proposals are due to NSF on Feb. 9, 2006. NSF anticipates making
15 to 20 Type 1 (projects designed to increase the number
of students in STEM baccalaureate degree programs) awards in 2006.
The total funding pool for FY06 and FY07 is $25M. Awards can range
up to a total of $2M, for up to 5 years for Type 1 projects. Cost
share is no longer required, and full federal F&A rates apply. We
encourage you to apply for these grants. UNL is limited to one
Type 1 proposal submission or to be part of only one consortium
submitting a Type 1 proposal. In order to select the best proposal
for submission, we are now soliciting pre-proposals. The deadline
for electronic submission of pre-proposals is 4 p.m., Wednesday,

10. "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome During Pregnancy" project seeks subjects

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a painful problem primarily
resulting from the compression of the median nerve in carpal
tunnel of the wrist. Research reports that 28 percent of
pregnant women have CTS symptoms. We are looking for pregnant
women in their 1st or 2nd trimester to participate in this
study, which will help pregnant women make informed decisions
about tasks and their potential impacts on CTS symptoms during
pregnancy. Participants will be interviewed at the end of their
1st, 2nd and 3rd trimester to answer questionnaires and have
tests on maximum grip/pinch strength, nerve conduction test,
etc. It will require approximately 30 minutes and subjects will
be reimbursed $25 for each visit, (Maximum 3 times for total
$75). This research is approved by the UNL IRB office and funded
by the Department of Industrial & Management Systems Engineering.

12. Noah Feldman: Divided by Darwin: Creations and Popular Politics

A free lecture by Noah Feldman will be presented from noon to
1 p.m. Wed., Nov. 2 on the Lied Center Main Stage. Feldman
specializes in the relationship between religion and political
authority. His third book, Divided by God: America's Church-State
Problem is in bookstores now. He will speak about the relationship
between political authority and religion as it relates to the
Scopes Trial and the teaching of evolution in public schools.

A special lecture, "The Evolutionary History of Life's
Molecules," will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Nov 3 in the

The panel discussion, "Our Origins: Evolution, Intelligent Design

23. Civil rights group founder Ben Chaney to speak Nov. 4

Ben Chaney, founder and president of the nonprofit civil rights
James Earl Chaney Foundation, will speak on civil rights, human
rights and social justice at the Nebraska Union Auditorium at
3 p.m. Nov. 4. Chaney's brother, James Earl, was murdered in 1964
in Mississippi by the Ku Klux Klan, along with Andrew Goodman
and Michael Schwerner, for trying to register African Americans
