 2. NSF PIRE Internal Competitions Announced

The Office of Research and Graduate Studies has announced an internal
competition to select NSF Partnerships for International Research and
Education (PIRE) preproposals. UNL can submit three preliminary proposals.
The NSF submission deadline for preliminary proposals is Oct. 30, and
full proposals (by invitation only from NSF) is Feb. 28, 2007.
Preproposals for the internal competition are due by noon Sept. 11 to

 3. Southwest Airline Direct Ticket Purchases

UNL Travel Services has designed a website (URL below) where employees
can self register for access to the Southwest Airlines website to directly
purchase airfare tickets. This site employs the same Southwest Airline
screens as for leisure travel, no transaction fees are charged, the University
ghost credit card is available for payment of business related air trips, and
Airfare Situation Reports will no longer be needed to purchase from the
Southwest Airlines site. You can go to the website listed below and print
off the instructions and self register. If you have any questions, call

 4. United Airlines Contract Update

Effective Aug. 1, the United Airline discount for tickets purchased
through Travel and Transport expired. Ticket purchases made through T&T, the
United Airlines reservation desk or United website will be priced the same.
Effective Aug. 1, the Transaction Fee on United Airline tickets purchased
through a T&T representative will be the same as airline ticket purchases
from all other carriers - phone assisted tickets will be charged $20; tickets
purchased through the T&T's website will be charged $10. For further

 5. MobilePATH and EVM Upgrade

MobilePATH and EVM (Optional Voice Mail Features) will not be available on
Thursday, Sept. 14 while an upgrade is installed by Telecommunicatons. This
upgrade will allow us to streamline the user interface of EVM for the Campus
and increase security around these and other voice mail services. If you 
have any questions, call Telecommunicatons at 472-3434.

 6. Jr. Blackshirts Next Registration Deadline is Sept. 6

Children can be signed up now for next Saturday's game against Nicholls
State. The deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 6. Register at the Campus Rec
Center, or call 472-3467 for more information. Jr. Blackshirts events
begin 90 minutes before scheduled game time. Check with the Athletics
Department for official game times. The cost is $20.

 7. Ambassador John R. Bolton to open EN Thompson 2006-07 Season

Ambassador John Bolton will deliver the opening lecture of the 2006-07
EN Thompson Forums on World Issues at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8 at the
Lied Center. The event is free but tickets will be required. Tickets
are available at the Lied Box Office. No backpacks or large bags
admitted into auditorium. Bolton's lecture is titled, "Key U.S.
Interests and the United Nations."

 9. Study Abroad Fair Sept. 26

Students who want to enhance their education and expand their horizons,
realize studying abroad is a must. Learning about such programs is the
gateway to these experiences. Tell your students that the Study Abroad
Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26 inside the
Nebraska Union. They can get information about the many programs,
scholarships and financial aid, and travel services surrounding study
abroad. They can also register for a $250 scholarship.

10. Open House at C.Y. Thompson Library Sept. 11

On Monday, Sept. 11, from 3 to 5 p.m., the University Libraries will hold
an open house at C.Y. Thompson Library on East Campus for UNL faculty and
staff. CYT Library staff will lead tours of the building and show off the
new study area and other changes that have taken place. There will also be
information on future changes and improvements.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, the UNL Department of Entomology, Lincoln Public
Schools and the Lincoln Children's Zoo will team up to present Bug Bash,
a close look at the planet's most successful life form. Come and give

22. RefWorks - Lunch and Learn Sessions

The UNL Libraries is offering Lunch and Learn sessions on the new web-based
bibliographic reference manager called RefWorks, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30
p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21 at the Nebraska Union, and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 27 at the East Campus Union. RefWorks is available now at
the URL below and can download citations from Libraries' indexes, organize
and format them in any style in a file on the web. RefWorks can handle large
dissertation sized projects as well as journal manuscripts and research papers.
A shared bibliography account can be set up for group projects, where each
member of the research team has access to the bibliography. Contact

The first Staff Art Exhibition opens in the Nebraska Union Rotunda

* A Cabaret Performance: Jazz Standards - UNL's coordinator of
Musical Theatre Studies, Alisa Belflower, will present a vocal recital
in the format of a cabaret performance at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept.
5 at 119 Westbrook Recital Hall. The performance will include American
jazz standards arranged by Nelson Neves, who also serves as pianist
for this cabaret. Professor Belflower will pay tribute with songs by
composers honored in the Celebration of American Song Series. This

29. White House Egg Artistry Contest

Six Nebraska artists have submitted entries in the 13th annual egg artistry
contest sponsored by the Poultry and Egg Division of the Nebraska Department of
Agriculture. The public can view the eggs and vote for their favorite one at
the University of Nebraska State Museum (Morrill Hall) on the UNL City Campus
(14th and U Streets) in Lincoln. The eggs will be on display until October 2,
2006. Museum hours are:  Mondays through Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.,
and Sundays from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eggs are to be judged based on the best
depiction of the state of Nebraska. The winning egg will be on display at the
White House during Easter, 2007.  A Nebraska artist will have his or her work
viewed by the President of the United States and White House visitors.  The

The number one ranked Husker volleyball team faces opponents from the Big 10
and the Big 12 Conferences this week when they play host to the Minnesota
