 1. Alumni Memberships Now Available - UNL Campus Rec Centers

For the first time ever, Nebraska alumni can now join the UNL Campus Rec
Centers as their choice for exercise and fitness facilities. Alumni members
must: 1) be a current member of the Nebraska Alumni Association, and
2) commit to a one-year membership with the Campus Rec Centers, and
3) make payment for the entire year at the time of registration. A
maximum of 250 memberships will be offered in the intial year. The cost is
$480 annually ($40 per month). For more info, call the UNL Campus Rec

 2. Limited Submission - Burroughs Wellcome Fund

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund has announced a limited submission -
Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Awards [for
accomplished assistant professors].The nomination deadline is Nov. 1.
This program provides opportunities for assistant professors to bring
multidisciplinary approaches to the study of human infectious diseases.
Institutions may nominate up to two candidates (three if at least one
researcher holds the D.V.M.). If you are interested in making a nomination
or being nominated, contact Dr. Kimberly Andrews Espy at 472-2851, no

 3. Solicitation for new summer 2008 courses

UNL Summer Sessions is seeking proposals for new summer sessions courses and
for-credit workshops to be taught in Summer 2008. This can include offering
an existing fall/spring course in summer or proposing a completely new course.
Each approved course will receive $1000 in funding to help foster its success.
Proposals are due by Sept. 21. See the website for details and the

 4. Jr. Blackshirts registration now open

Registration for the 2007 Jr. Blackshirts season is now open at UNL
Campus Recreation. Jr. Blackshirts is a youth program that offers
recreational activities in a child care setting for children ages 2-12
years during Husker home football games (while their parents/guardians
attend the game). Pre-registration is required and the price is $20 per
child per game. The first game vs. Nevada is Sept. 1 and the registration
deadline is Aug. 29. For more details, call UNL Campus Recreation at

 7. Lemonade Stand Fund-raiser for Molly Lanham

A lemonade stand fund-raiser will be held for Molly Lanham, the
kindergartner that was hit by a vehicle en route to her school bus
last May. Lanham's parents are UNL employees. The stand will be up from
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 22 and 23 at the Nebraska Union plaza by the
fountain. Sponsored by Campus Recreation Advisory Council, the Bursar's
office and Student Accounts.

 8. Ron J. Johnson Retirement Reception Aug. 10

A retirement reception will be held for Ron Johnson from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Aug. 10 in Hardin Hall, 2nd floor lobby. Johnson has been with UNL since
February 1979 as a UNL extension wildlife specialist and professor. He
will be moving on to a new position at Clemson University in S.C.

 9. Panel to discuss what the public should know about bridges

In light of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis, the
Department of Civil Engineering will host a seminar on bridge
engineering  from 10 to 11 a.m. Aug. 8 in the Nebraska Union
auditorium. The title is "The Layperson's Guide to Bridge Engineering."
The event is free and open to the public.

10. UNL Design Toolbox Training

The University Communications Design Toolbox for campus print and promotional
materials was updated in June 2007. Training sessions are scheduled for
9 to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 21 in the Nebraska East Union (first-time attendees)
and for 1:30 to 3 p.m. Aug. 22 in the Nebraska Union (update attendees).

11. Sunshine opening Friday at the Ross

12. Feedsack Trunk Show at the Hillestad Textiles Gallery

Collector Gloria Hall will share highlights from her extensive collection of
feedsack textiles of the early 20th century. Feedsacks were recycled into
clothing, household linens, quilts and many other items as American women
followed the maxim of "make do or do without." This show is presented in
conjunction with the International Quilt Study Exhibition "Recycling and
Resourcefulness: Quilts of the 1930s" open through the month of August at
the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery, UNL East Campus.
