 1. Winter Weather information
When the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is closed due to winter weather,
the University Operator will provide closing information to anyone who
calls into the University's main number, 472-7211. Make sure you notify
the operator if your office decides to open.

 2. City Campus Chilled Water Outage Jan. 5-9
A City Campus Chilled Water Outage is tentatively planned to occur Jan. 5
to Jan. 9. These dates were selected to coincide with a low level of student
activity on the campus. The outage is necessary to perform maintenance at
the City Campus Utility Plant that is not possible during normal operations.
During this Chilled Water Outage, there will be no chilled water for
equipment cooling or air-conditioning. Building air-conditioning will
continue to be provided using cold outside air. If warm days occur during
this outage, interior building temperatures may be elevated. Contact

questions or concerns regarding the outage or need accommodations during
this time period.

 4. Nominations Sought for 2009 'Fulfilling the Dream' Awards
The Fulfilling the Dream award was established in 1997 to honor individuals
who have contributed to the UNL community or the wider Lincoln community by
their exemplary action in promoting the goals and vision of the Rev. Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Nomination materials, including a letter of nomination
and no more than three letters of support, should be sent by Jan. 5 to Jody

It's tax time. Sign up to become a Volunteer Income Tax Assistant (VITA)

"Staying Close to Home," an exhibition and slide presentation by Keith
Jacobshagen, and an introductory poetry reading by Ted Kooser, will be
held at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Great Plains Art Museum, 1155 Q St. The
event is part of Nebraska Statewide Arboretum's 30th anniversary celebrations,
closing a statewide arboretum tour of Jacobshagen's notebooks.

18. Research Seminar, Dec. 3
"Cadherin Regulation in Vascular Development and in the Autoimmune Blistering
Disease Pemphigus Vulgaris," will be presented by Dr. Andrew Kowalczyk,
associate professor, Department of Cell Biology and Dermatology at Emory
University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Ga., at 4 p.m. Dec. 3 in Dixon
Lecture Hall, UNMC College of Dentistry (UNL East Campus), 40th and Holdrege.
The seminar is sponsored by the College of Dentistry, Research Committee,
Oral Biology and the Nebraska Center for Cellular Signaling. The seminar is

19. The Drought of the 1890s on the Western High Plains
The Great Plains have been settled in a series of advances and retreats, with
people's optimism and ambitions running up against the grim reality of drought.
Dr. David Wishart will present a talk which will focus on settlers early
experiences with drought at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 in Hardin Hall, East Campus. He'll
highlight some of the characters of the time, such as Melbourne the Rain wizard,
a con man who made a business of promising what he could not deliver. SNR
Outreach Seminar Series includes free parking and refreshments and is open to
the general public.

* Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m., the Moran Woodwind Quintet will give a recital in
Kimball Recital Hall.
* Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m., the Big Red Singers and Vocal Jazz Ensembles will
give a recital in Kimball Recital Hall.
* Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m., the Symphonic Band will give a concert in Kimball
Recital Hall.
* Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m. and Dec 7 at 2 p.m., the Chamber Singers will
perform their annual holiday recital in the Sheldon Art Gallery. This
program is free and open to the public.
* Dec. 6 and Dec. 7, both at 3 p.m., the University Singers, University Chorale,
East Campus Choir, City Campus Choir, Chamber Singers, and Varsity Men's Chorus
will come together on the Kimball Recital Hall stage in the annual Choral
Garland concert.
* Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m., the Large Brass Ensembles will give a recital in
Kimball Recital Hall.
Unless otherwise noted tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students
and seniors and will be available at the door approximately one hour before
