 1. Critical Alert-Keep Your Computer Updated
Hacker attacks designed to subvert internet traffic flow have been hitting
computers and servers worldwide in the past few days. It is important for
all computers users to keep their operating systems updated with the current
system security patches. Whenever possible, ensure that your computer's operating
system is set to receive system updates automatically. If you have any

 2. Library server maintenance Sunday, August 3
The University Libraries Catalog (library.unl.edu) and the UNL Libraries
Digital Collections (contentdm.unl.edu) will be down from 8:00 a.m. -
11:00 a.m. Sunday, August 3 for needed maintenance.  In addition,
the UNL Libraries online catalog, electronic resources and course reserves
will be unavailable for approximately 30 minutes during that time.

 4. Limited Submission - Burroughs Wellcome Fund
Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Awards [for
accomplished assistant professors. The nomination deadline is Nov. 3.
Institutions may nominate up to two candidates (three if at least one
researcher holds the D.V.M.). Institutions may have a single additional
nomination if they nominate a researcher working in pathogenic helminths,
mycology or reproductive science. If you are interested in applying,
complete a Notification of Intent to Submit form no later than Aug. 18.

 6. Planetarium 's 50th Anniversary: 1950s ticket prices
Mueller Planetarium at the University of Nebraska State Museum will celebrate
its 50th anniversary Aug. 2 with a one-day return to 1950s ticket prices
(adults 50 cents, children 25 cents). The planetarium will feature the new
fulldome show, "Black Holes," and the show for young audiences, "Secret of the
Cardboard Rocket." Shows running every hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission
to the museum is free with UNL ID.

 8. The Garcia Girls and Blindsight open Friday at the Ross
* How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer (Aug 1-7) - In her tenderly
comic, richly textured feature debut, Georgina Garcia Riedel lovingly
explores the terrain of longing, loneliness, and self-realization among
three generations of single women in a Mexican American family as they
grapple with romantic drought.
* Blindsight (Aug 1-7) - A documentary following six blind Tibetan
teenagers as they climb the Lhakpa-Ri peak of Mount Everest, led by
seven-summit blind mountain-climber Erik Weihenmayer.

 9. Mammoth Fossils Discovery on NOVA July 30
The tangled tusks of two Ice Age mammoths and the quest to unravel the mystery
of their deaths is the focus of an NET Television-produce segment for the PBS
series "NOVA scienceNOW," airing at 8 p.m. July 30 on NET1 and NET-HD. The
segment of NOVA scienceNOW follows Michael Voorhies (UNL emeritus professor)
and forensic paleontologist Dan Fisher as they try to solve this 12,000-year-
old mystery and determine what ultimately led to the deaths of these two
mammoths. Fossils are now on display at the Trailside Museum in Crawford,
Neb., part of the University of Nebraska State Museum.

10. New Books in July from the University of Nebraska Press
"The Nebraska-Kansas Act of 1854," an essay collection edited by John R.
Wunder, professor of history and journalism, and Joann M. Ross, a doctoral
candidate in the Department of History, is now available from the University
of Nebraska Press. Also new this month is "Apostles of Modernity: American
Writers in the Age of Development" by Guy Reynolds, professor of English
