 1. Lane, street closures continue
Lane and street closures continue near City Campus while the city of Lincoln
replaces water mains on 12th, 17th and R streets. R Street will be closed from
16th to 17th streets May 12-19 for work on R street. Northbound 12th Street
between Q and R streets will be closed May 12-19. The intersection of 12th and
R streets will be closed May 19-26 for work on 12th and R streets. The new
mains will improve water distribution on campus and the street closures are
needed to accommodate the contractors' work.

 2. Libraries Server Maintenance
The University Libraries' server maintenance will be performed from 8 a.m.
to noon May 11 while the Libraries are closed. Services that will be
unavailable are: on-line InterLibrary Loan forms, GIS, and the database
SciFinder. On-line access to the Libraries' catalog is unaffected and will
be available.

 3. Blackboard Downtime / Archive Your Blackboard Courses
Blackboard will be unavailable from 3 to 9 p.m. on May 17. During that
time, Information Services will delete all Blackboard courses created
before the Summer 2005 term. To keep a copy of the content of your courses
prior to Summer 2005, you must create archives of your courses. Click the link

 4. Personal Response System (PRS) - No Support for IR Clickers
This Fall, ITG's Classroom Support team will no longer support the infrared
(IR) clickers for use with Interwrite's Personal Response System. Students
must have the RF clicker (the one with the LCD display) for all PRS classes.

 6. Mid Semester Check 2008
The purpose of the Mid-Semester Check is to provide first-year and entering
transfer students information they might need to better understand academic
expectations and requirements, as well as obtain the information necessary
to make informed decisions about their academic direction. The fall 2008
Mid Semester Check will be held Sept. 15, 16, 17 and 18 in the Nebraska Union.
On Sept. 17 Mid-Semester Check will feature a special event for undeclared
majors, GPS: MAJORS and MOREs FAIR. You may want to include this information
on your fall 2008 syllabus, particularly if you are teaching first- and
second-year general education courses.

 7. UNL Confucius Institute offers Chinese Summer Course Options
CORRECTION - Summer Chinese Language and Martial Arts Classes will be
offered June 16-27, Monday through Friday, with the choice of a morning
or afternoon session. Beginning Chinese I and II will also be offered
May 13-June 10 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For more

 8. Need to collect data?
The Bureau of Sociological Research (BOSR) at UNL has a trained and
professional staff available to assist researchers and departments with
a variety of data collection needs (telephone interviews, mail surveys,
Web surveys, focus groups, data entry, transcription, etc.). They currently
have staff available to work on data collection projects, including
telephone interviewing, entry projects and transcription of audio tapes
and digital files. As a non-profit organization, BOSR is a cost-effective

14. Campus Rec Center Closed May 12-18
The UNL Campus Rec Center will be closed May 12 through May 18 for
its annual maintenance shutdown. The EC Activities Building will remain
open for recreation and fitness usage. Hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Monday-Friday; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

15. 2008-2009 - Nebraska Colloquium - Democracy
The goal of the Nebraska Colloquium is to raise the level of intellectual
discourse among UNL students, faculty and staff under the framework of a
campus-wide theme that serves as an organizing mechanism for unit activities
and events that would contribute to the theme. Because of its presence on
campus and in the community, they have adopted the yearly themes established by
the EN Thompson Forum Committee for its lecture series. The EN Thompson Forum
theme for the 2007-08 academic year is Democracy's Future. Professor Patrice
Berger, director of the NU Honors Program, will host a series of Honors Forum
talks as part of the Nebraska Colloquium to complement the EN Thompson Forum
theme. Each Honors Forum talk will feature a UNL faculty member. The Honors
Forum talks are open to the public. The Office of Undergraduate Studies
invites the campus community to participate in these forums and to contribute
to a campus wide discussion of Democracy through the Nebraska Colloquium.

18. Astronomy Day is May 10 at NU State Museum
Astronomy Day will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 10 at the
University of Nebraska State Museum. There will be family fun with
astronomers, and hands on activities, as well as displays of telescopes,
computer astronomy and astronomical photos by members of the Prairie
Astronomy Club. Fulldome show will be "Extreme Planets" playing at 11
a.m., noon, 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. UNL Faculty, staff and students get in

The Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Topology and Representation Theory
conference, from May 18-22 in 115 Avery Hall, is in honor of Luchezar

The University Bookstore will host a book signing by Lee C. White at 1 p.m.
May 9 in the Nebraska Union Bookstore location. White, who was Special
Counsel to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, will be signing copies of his

Omaha native, White received his bachelor's and law degrees from the

25. "Still Life" and "The Violin" open Friday at the Ross
* "Still Life" (May 9-15): Still Life, winner Golden Lion, Venice Film
Festival 2006, is an empathetic portrait of those left behind by a
modernizing society. The film follows a seperated couple as they
reconnect in the shadow of the Three Gorges hydro project.
* "The Violin" (May 9-15): Mexican director Francisco Vargas Quevedo
presents the story of Don Plutarco, an elderly farmer and violinist;
the aged patriarch of a musical family who has fashioned an ingenious
way of smuggling ammunition beneath the noses of government troops.
Shot simply and starkly in Black and White this mood-driven character
exploration of familial love, duty, conflict and innocence is set in
rural Mexico during the peasant revolts of the 1970s.

26. The Ross Passport: 4 Movies at the Ross for $15
During the month of May, the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center is showing
four films from four corners of the world: "Still Life" from China, "Caramel"
from Lebanon, "The Violin" from Mexico, and "Body of War" from the United
States. All four of these films have received considerable accolades and
honors. They represent a diversity of cultures, an array of filmmaking
styles, and offer four extremely compelling stories. The Ross is offering
a special Passport price of $15 ($10 for students and members of the Friends
of the Ross) that will admit their patrons to any screenings of all four
films. Passports will be on sale at their ticket counter beginning May 1.

27. Two Husker Baseball Games on NET Television
Two of the Big 12 Conference's leading baseball teams face-off when the Texas
A&M Aggies and the Nebraska Huskers collide in hardball competition on May 10.
"Nebraska Baseball" will be broadcast live from Hawks Field in Lincoln at 2 p.m.
on NET1 Channel 12 and in high-definition on NET-HD. Then in-state bragging
rights are up for grabs when Nebraska visits the Creighton Bluejays' home
diamond at Omaha's Rosenblatt Stadium on "Creighton Baseball," airing at
7 p.m. May 13 also on NET1 Channel 12 and in high-definition on NET-HD.
