The Food Processing Center is offering a one-day seminar for all individuals

A nutrition education intervention is looking for UNL female staff members,

 5. Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Program - Funding Opportunity
The Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad (FRA) Fellowship Program CFDA
84.019A has announced a funding opportunity with a deadline of Dec. 3. The
research project must focus on one or more of the following geographic areas:
Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near
East, East Central Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding
the United States and its territories). Applications that propose projects
focused on Western Europe are not eligible. Applications must be made through

 6. Kids Night Out - Campus Rec
UNL Campus Recreation is offering Kids Night Out for youth age 6-9 years from
5:30 to 10 p.m. Nov. 7 at Campus Rec Center. The cost is $16 per child for
UNL students and CREC members; $24 per child for general public.

 7. Dare to Care 2008
Dare to Care is UNL's campus-wide competitive food drive. This competition
is open to any group, whether it be a faculty group, student group, or an
RSO. All food will be donated to the Lincoln Food Bank to provide over 3000
Lincoln families in need a Thanksgiving dinner. With help, this year can be

 8. Farewell Reception for Jim Locklear
Nebraska Statewide Arboretum staff and board will hold a farewell reception
for Jim Locklear from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 31 at Maxwell Arboretum (weather

 9. Journalism College covers Election 2008 on Nov. 4
The College of Journalism and Mass Communications is planning an extensive
night of converged election coverage. More than 70 students in radio,
television, online and print journalism have been gearing up to cover Election
2008. The student participation in election coverage is the capstone in a
semester of election-focused events. Coverage begins at 8 p.m. Nov. 4 and will
continue until about midnight. Students will produce and host a live newscast
on Channel 21 with reports streaming to NewsNetNebraska, the college's
student-produced multimedia news service, and 90.3 KRNU. Students will do live
newsroom shots from campaign headquarters, conduct exit poll interviews during
voting hours and photojournalists will be sending in photos from across Lincoln
that evening.

10. Native American Heritage Month Celebration
Join OASIS and UNITE as they celebrate Native American Heritage Month
with a lecture by Dr. Darryl Tonemah at 3 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Nebraska Union

11. WGS Colloquium - Dorothy Allison, Oct. 30
Award-winning author Dorothy Allison, will give a talk titled "Context and
Contradiction: Standing in a Place I Did Not Know How to Imagine" at 7:30
p.m. Oct. 30 in the Nebraska Union auditorium. She will discuss gender and
sexuality and the lack of change for women and queers in the last 30 years.
This is the third event of the Women's and Gender Studies Colloquium Series

Michael Grunwald, senior correspondent for Time magazine and award-winning
journalist, will talk about his book, The Swamp, and lessons for nation-wide

13. 'Bird Brain' Lecture Oct. 30
When someone uses the idiom "bird brain," what comes to mind might not
reflect the phrase's true meaning. During the fall Nebraska Lecture, UNL
behavioral ecologist Alan C. Kamil will discuss how birds use their
cognitive abilities to survive at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Nebraska Union
auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will

14. Schlesinger Professorship for Social Justice Lecture
Schlesinger Assistant Professor of Social Justice, Ari Kohen, will deliver a
lecture titled, "A Case of Moral Heroism: Sympathy, Personal Identification
and Mortality in Rwanda" at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 in the the Great Plains Art Gallery,
1155 Q Street. Kohen is also an assistant professor of Political Science at
UNL. He is the author of "In Defense of Human Rights", published Spring 2007.
The lecture is sponsored by the Schlesinger Professorship for Social Justice
Fund as a part of the Norman and Bernice Harris Center for Judaic Studies.

15. National Climate Change Legislation and Opportunities for Nebraska
Thomas C. Sorensen Policy Seminar: National Climate Change Legislation and
Opportunities for Nebraska will be held from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Nov. 6 in the
Nebraska Union auditorium. The forum will explore climate change legislation
that will likely be considered by the new Congress in 2009, and examine the
opportunities and challenges it will present to Nebraska. Keynote speakers
include David Hawkins, Climate Center, Natural Resources Defense Council,
and John McClure, Nebraska Public Power District, followed by a panel
discussion featuring industry, energy, and policy experts. The event is free

16. Sigma Xi  Lecture Explores Ethanol Production Risks, Solutions
"Environmental and Health Risks Associated with Corn-based Ethanol Production:
Possible Solutions" is the topic of a free public lecture at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 29

Department of Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of

17. Nez Perce Country: Our Beloved Homeland
W. Otis Halfmoon will present "Nez Perce Country: Our Beloved Homeland" at
5 p.m. Oct. 30 in Love Library Room 110. Halfmoon, (Nez Perce), National
Park Service, worked as a consultant on the Lewis and Clark and the Indian
Country exhibit and is a descendant of Heyuum Pahkit Timna (Grizzly Bear
with Five Hearts), a Nez Perce Chief who met the Corps of Discovery on
their return journey. He describes Nez Perce life before Lewis and Clark,
and the untold stories and the impact of this small part of tribal history.
He will discuss the present condition of the tribe and touch upon issues
that pertain to the protection of natural and cultural resources.

The new digital world has many of us confused about the boundaries between
"open access" publishing and commercial publishing. Graduate students now have
a number of options for making their dissertation research available to others.

The 3rd Annual UNL Staff Art Exhibition opens on Nov. 3 and continues through

OASIS, LGBTQA Programs and Services, and Sigma Lamb Beta Fraternity will

One night only. The Alloy Orchestra is a three man musical ensemble, writing
and performing live accompaniment to classic silent films. At 7:30 p.m. Oct.

"Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon," is a digital realization of the
entire classic album that will fill the Mueller dome with both concrete and

It might take some doing, but the Iowa State Cyclones certainly will give it
their all as they attempt an upset of John Cook's high-flying Husker volleyball
team when the two Big 12 Conference teams tangle on Nov. 1. The contest
between the powerful Big Red and the Christy Johnson-coached Cyclones -
currently in the bottom third of the Big 12 - will be broadcast on "Nebraska
