 2. New and Revised Professorships Announced
Two new professorships and an increase in the funding for newly appointed
Cather/Bessey professors has been announced. Full professors with at least
a 40 percent apportionment in teaching who have developed a sustained record
of teaching excellence and national visibility for instructional activities/
practice will be eligible for a new professorship, yet to be formally named,
for teaching excellence. Faculty will be appointed for a five-year, renewable
term and receive an annual stipend of $5000. Tenured associate professors who
have a distinguished record of scholarship or creative activity and who show
exceptional promise for the future may be nominated for a newly created
professorship, yet to be formally named, for faculty at this rank. Faculty
who receive this award will be appointed for one five-year, non-renewable
term and receive an annual stipend of $5000. Full professors who are named
or re-appointed to Cather/Bessey Professorships in the AY 2008-09
competition and beyond will receive a $5000 annual stipend, up from the
previous stipend of $3000.

 3. Oct. 15 is National Latino AIDS Awareness Day
Oct. 15 is National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD), a day to encourage
HIV testing and push for support from public officials. PERSUNL is offering
anonymous and confidential walk-in HIV Antibody Testing (w/ no needles)
free of charge to all students from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 15 in the
lower-level of the Culture Center.

 4. Convocations Committee Application Deadlines Oct. 24
The University Convocations Committee is now accepting applications for
spring 2008. The deadline is Oct. 24. You may access the forms at the

Bright Ideas monthly TBI Support Group invites survivors, friends and family
to share experiences, offer suggestions, learn strategies, gain awareness

 6. LGBTQ Grad/Non-Trad Discussion Group
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Graduate/Non-Traditional
Student Discussion Group is drop-in and designed to be a casual gathering

noon to 1 p.m. in room 32 of the Nebraska Union. This semester's meeting

 7. Relationship violence prevention programs available now
PREVENT, a student organization in partnership with the Women's Center, offers
peer education programs designed to stop relationship violence on campus and
in the community. Free, interactive, entertaining presentations focus on
building intervention skills and increasing awareness. Available for classes,

 8. Student Poster Presentations Requested
Nebraska EPSCoR will sponsor the fourth annual Nebraska Research and
Innovation Conference on Oct. 28. Graduate and undergradate students,
postdocs, and faculty are encouraged to present their work in a poster session.

11. Credit Union Offers Letters from Santa
The University of Nebraska Federal Credit Union is participating in Letters
from Santa, a program that allows members to request a personalized letter
from Santa to be sent to all of their little loved ones. The letters will
be personalized with the child's name and other information. Each letter
is only $3 with proceeds benefiting Children's Miracle Network. The deadline

Dorothy Allison, author of "Bastard Out of Carolina," is the keynote

The future of our nation's health care system is the topic for a discussion
between Sen. Chuck Hagel and former senator Bob Kerrey during an AARP/Public
Policy Center/PrairieFire event at 10 a.m. Oct. 9 at Kimball Hall. Doors
open at 9:15 a.m. The event is free and open to the public. The forum will

The UNL Empowerment Forum will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 31 in the

* In Search of a Midnight Kiss (Oct. 10-16) - One week only. Alex Holdridge's
comedy follows the plight of Wilson (Scoot McNairy), a 29-year-old man who
has just suffered through the most miserable year of his life. A new arrival
to the City of Angels, Wilson ends up alone and penniless as New Year's Eve
rapidly approaches, and vows to lock his doors, pull his blinds, and climb
