 1. Service Awards Program
Congratulations to all who are receiving an award this year for continued
service at UNL. These awards are presented to employees who have achieved
years of service in increments of five years. Award recipients may view
award options and make award selection online at the URL below. Recipients
will be honored at the combined event of the 2009 State of the University
Address and the Employee Service Awards Program on Sept. 10 at the Lied
Center. Award selections need to be made by May 18. For assistance,

 2. Annual Steam Outages for 2009
Planning for the annual steam outages has begun. The centralized steam
distribution system must be shut down to conduct required maintenance of
equipment,including replacing and upgrading many key components of the
University's Utility System. The outages will occur on the following dates
depending upon an average weekly high temperature of 60 degrees or more.
* City Campus only from May 10 through May 16.
* East Campus only from May 17 through May 23.
These dates were selected due to the decreased student activity on campus.
During the steam outages there will be no heating and no process steam
available in those building systems served by campus steam. In order to

 3. Parking and Traffic Congestion May 4-8
Students will be moving out of residence halls May 4-8, with the heaviest
movement on Thursday and Friday. Watch for barricades, closed traffic
lanes and parking cadets providing traffic control around the residence
halls, including 14th Street west of the Harper/Schramm/Smith/Village
complex and 16th, 17th and Vine Streets between "R" and Vine.

 4. Annual Maintenance Closedowns for Campus Rec Centers
The City Campus Rec Center will be closed to all activities May 11 to May
17 for annual maintenance work. The CREC member services desk and the EC
Activities Building will remain open for member and patron use. Annual
maintenance work at the East Campus Activities Building will occur May 18
to May 25, with the city campus Rec Center open for use during that time.

 5. Lincoln Marathon and Half Marathon May 3
The Lincoln Marathon and Half Marathon will take place May 3 beginning at
7 a.m. in front of the UNL Coliseum. There will be limited parking near
the Campus Rec Center during the morning hours due to this event. Campus
Rec members and students are asked to plan accordingly.

 6. Change to International Student Check-in
Effective May 11, check-in for new international students will take place
at 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at International Affairs. Students who
come in for check-in at other times will be asked to return for the next 3
p.m. check-in.

 7. Dr. Norman Smith Retirement Reception April 29
A retirement reception for Dr. Norman Smith, Department of Geosciences,
will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 29 in Elephant Hall of the
University of Nebraska State Museum. Smith arrived at UNL in 1998 and
served as department chair from 1998-2004. Refreshments will be served.

 8. Dr. Nancy Lindsley-Griffin Retirement Reception April 29
A retirement reception for Dr. Nancy Lindsley-Griffin, Department of
Geosciences, will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 29 in Elephant Hall
of the University of Nebraska State Museum. Lindsley-Griffin has been a
professor in the department for the past 26 years. Refreshements will be
served.

 9. Robert Fought Retirement Reception April 30
The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts will celebrate Dr.
Robert A. Fought, associate dean, on the occasion of his retirement from
UNL after 35 years of service. The celebration will be held from 3 to 5
p.m. April 30 in the Studio Theatre of the Temple Building at 12th and R
St. R.S.V.P. to Sara Simonsen at 472-9339 if you plan to attend.

10. Astronomy Day at the NU State Museum / Planetarium
Celebrate Astronomy Day at Morrill Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m May 2.
It will be a fun day of science for all ages with planetarium shows,
hands-on activities, demonstrations on space travel, rocketry, robotics,
physics, telescopes and much more. All visitors will have the chance to
win one of three telescopes and other giveaways. Located south of 14th and
Vine St.

Professor Jan Minac of the University of Western Ontario, Canada, will
speak in the Mathematics Department Colloquium series at 4 p.m. May 1 in

Quotients of Absolute Galois Groups." The talk will be preceded by

22. Of Krummhorns, Viols and Hurdy Gurdies
"Of Krummhorns, Viols and Hurdy Gurdies: Sounds of the Medieval and
Renaissance World," will be presented by the Lincoln Early Music Consort
at 5 p.m. May 7 at the Music Library in the Westbrook Music Building. The
group will play instruments and songs from the Medieval and Renaissance
period. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Libraries of the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln. An annual meeting will follow the
presentation.

23. School of Music Events: April 28-May 4
* April 28 at 7:30 p.m., UNL Opera will present "Later The Same Evening"
in Sheldon Museum of Art in the Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium. Tickets are
required for this event which is free and open to the public.
* April 29 at 7:30 pm, the Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr.
Carolyn Barber, will give their final concert of the Spring semester in
Kimball Recital Hall.
Thursday, Apr 30 at 7:30 p.m., the Symphonic Band, under the direction of
Anthony M. Falcone, will give their final concert of the Spring semester
in Kimball Recital Hall. The concert is entitled "Inspirations" and will
feature guest conductor Douglas W. Bush, and trombonists Dr. Scott
Anderson, Craig Mathis, Marissa Penner, and Josh Deutmeyer.
* May 1 at 7:30 p.m., Musical Theatre Showcase will present "A Reason to
Love" in Westbrook Recital Hall, room 119. The program will feature 12
masters students from the School of Music and the Johnny Carson School of
Theatre and Film. This event is free and open to the public. Note that
this performance contains adult language and situations.
Unless otherwise noted tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for
students and seniors and will be available at the door approximately one
