The U. S. Department of Labor has issued new regulations under the Family
Medical Leave Act (FMLA) which reflect procedural changes and expansions to
include leave rights related to military service. Information on the new

 2. Submit Information for Research Fair Booklet by Jan. 30
The Office of Research invites faculty to provide information for the 2008
Major Sponsored Programs and Faculty Awards for Research and Creative Activity
booklet that will be distributed at the UNL Research Fair April 14-16. The

 3. Convocations Committee Application Deadline March 27
The University Convocations Committee is now accepting applications for fall
2009. The deadline is March 27. You may access the forms at the Web site
listed below. Due to limited funding, only one application per department
will be considered. Review of applications will begin shortly after the
deadline, with notification of awards in April.

 4. Deadline for Donaldson and Oldt nominations extended to Feb. 6
Nominations for the 2009 Carl A. Donaldson Award for Excellence in
Management and the Floyd S. Oldt Award for Exceptional Service to the
University will be accepted until Feb. 6. These awards are presented
annually to managerial/professional staff at the UAAD Annual Founders'
Day Program. The award recipients each receive a plaque, a $1,000
stipend and a one-year membership to UAAD. Nomination forms and criteria
are available on the UAAD web site.

 9. NACE International Student Virtual Career Fair
UNL Career Services is providing an opportunity for international students
to participate in the NACE International Student Virtual Career Fair. The
fair is open to International students currently studying at UNL who wish
to return to their home country for full-time or internship opportunities;
are currently pursuing one-year Optional Practical Training (OPT)
opportunities in the United States; and/or are currently pursuing summer
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) internships in the United States.

11. Dinosaurs and Disasters: A Fun Family Day with Scientists
The UNL State Museum and the UNL Department of Geosciences will host their
annual family fun day, "Dinosaurs and Disasters," from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Feb. 7 at Morrill Hall (14th and U St.). "Dinosaurs and Disasters" provides
a day of discovery and hands-on activities with more than 20 stations staffed
by UNL scientists and students. This year's theme is "Changes Over Time."
Admission to the museum is $5 for adults (19 and older), $3 for children
(5-18 years, 4 and younger are free), and $10 for families (up to two adults
and their children). There is an additional charge for planetarium shows.

30. Basketball documentary premieres at The Ross Feb. 3
"They Could Really Play the Game," a documentary about a small college
basketball team from the Appalachian hills of southeast Ohio, will be shown
at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. Admission is
free and open to the public. The documentary revisits one of the greatest
stories in American sports history. Perennial losers, the 1952 Rio Grande
Redmen basketball team beat opposing colleges big and small to save their
college from closing. The Redmen won 40 straight and averaged more than
100 points a game setting NCAA scoring records that still stand today.
The film was produced by UNL faculty Barney McCoy and Bruce Mitchell in
collaboration with the College of Journalism and Mass Communications,
Painted Rock Productions and WOSU-TV.

* Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m., faculty artist, John Bailey, flute, will be joined
by fellow faculty artist, Mark Clinton, piano, in a recital for flute
and piano. This event is free and open to the public.
* Jan. 31, the second annual Nebraska Red Violin Festival will take place in
Westbrook Music Building. Hosted by faculty artists David Neely, Rebecca
Fischer, and Julie Yoon, this year's guest artist is Peter Marsh, violinist
and director of Chamber Music at the University of Southern California. A
concert will be held at 10 a.m. in Sheldon Museum of Art and is free and
open to the public.
* Jan. 31, the Midwest Cup Show Choir Invitational will take place in the
Lied Center for Performing Arts and will last all day.
* Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m., the Haydn-Mendelssohn Chamber Festival will kick off
with a recital to celebrate Felix Mendelssohn. The recital will feature guest
violinist Peter Marsh, as well as faculty artists Clark Potter, viola; Mark
Clinton, piano; Christopher Marks, organ; David C. Neely, violin, and Karen
Becker, cello.
Unless otherwise noted tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students
and seniors and will be available at the door approximately one hour before
