 1. Annual School Supply Drive
University of Nebraska Federal Credit Union is partnering with
Encouragement Unlimited in its annual school supplies collection effort.
Items are donated to families in need of assistance. Some important items
include: pens, pencils, loose leaf paper, folders, notebooks, calculators,
backpacks and combination locks. Donations can be dropped off University
of Nebraska Federal Credit Union (17th and "Q" Street or 301 N 52nd
Street) or at Christ Temple Church at 25th and "S" Street.

 2. Can you say 'Go Big Red' in Chinese?
For the Fall 2009 semester, The Confucius Institute at UNL is offering
non-credit courses in Chinese language, culture and music. Classes are
taught by university language instructors from Xi'an Jiao Tong University,
a top 10 Chinese university. They are offered in both Lincoln and Omaha
and begin in September. Registration forms are available in W205 Nebraska

 4. Blackboard Downtime
My.UNL/Blackboard will be unavailable from 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 15, until
Noon on Aug. 15. The My.UNL team will use this time to bring a
backup/fail-over system online. This new enhanced level of disaster
recovery will help ensure minimal unintended disruption of Blackboard

 5. Nebraska Volleyball Tickets On Sale Aug. 5
Nebraska Volleyball single-match tickets, including the NU-UCLA match at

 8. UNOPA PSP 4th Annual Luncheon Aug. 29
The public is invited to attend UNOPA's 4th Annual PSP Luncheon from 11:30
a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at St. Mark's Methodist Church at 84th and
Pioneers. Come share Tony Fulton's story of how he was motivated to build
a culture of life in which the dignity of the human person is recognized
and celebrated. If you find yourself in the "Sandwich Generation" -

A Fall Gardening Workshop will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at the UNL
Kimmel Education and Research Center, 5985 G Road, Nebraska City, Neb.

cover vegetable crops that grow well during the fall plus cover some
season extending techniques that will help you get the most from your

13. Presentation, Book Signing by 'Galapagos' Author Aug. 14
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute will host a free public presentation
and book signing at 2 p.m. Aug. 14 by John Hess, the author of "Galapagos:
Exploring Darwin's Tapestry." The event will be held in the Arbor Room of
the Nebraska East Union. Hess is emeritus professor of biology at the
University of Central Missouri.

East Campus faculty, staff and friends are invited to a special "Recession
Survival Guide" brown bag lunch event at NET at noon on Aug. 11. Bring
your lunch and watch a screening of NET Television's "Recession Survival
Guide" program. After the screening get advice and answers on cutting food
costs, saving money on household expenses and managing your finances from
two of the UNL Extension experts featured in the project, Alice Henneman

Chicago actor Richard Marlatt premieres his one-man show, Abraham Lincoln
Carved in Stone, at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 4 in Howell Theatre, Temple Building.
Demystifying the iconic 16th President of the United States, Marlatt's
play is the perfect way to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Lincoln's

* Rudo y Cursi (Aug. 7-13) - Soccer provides the backdrop for this rowdy,
ramshackle comedy about two brothers-played by Gael Garcia Bernal and
Diego Luna-who find themselves opponents on the playing field.
* Adoration (Aug. 7-13) - For his French-class assignment, a high school
student weaves his family history together with a news story involving
terrorism, and goes on to invite an Internet audience in on the resulting
controversy.

18. Hillestad Gallery Friends seeking items for annual fundraiser
The Friends of the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery is seeking items for
the annual gallery fundraiser. This 501c3 support group will hold its
annual benefit garage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 15 at 3925 Apple
St., south of East Campus. Donations may be brought to the TCD office, 234
Home Economics Building, during normal business hours. The deadline for
