 1. Severe Weather Awareness Week is March 22-26
UNL will join Lincoln/Lancaster County Emergency Management in testing all
tornado-warning systems at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 24. Drills may
cause disruption to classes and work. It is important, however, to test
the systems which support a safe environment for our campus. Everyone is
encouraged to participate so that they know the proper shelters for their

 2. Convocations Committee Funding Deadline
The UNL Convocations Committee deadline for applications for Fall 2010 is
April 1. This year the committee will not accept applications unless they
are the new ones available from the Faculty Senate Web site. Guidelines

 3. Wireless Computer Network Building Upgrades, March 23-25
The wireless computer network will be upgraded to faster 802.11AGN
technology in the following buildings: Chase, March 23; Seaton, March 24;
Library Storage, March 25. Wireless users will experience minimal downtime
as Information Services either upgrades router software and/or replaces

 9. Submit Posters Now for Water for Food: Growing More with Less
April 5 is the deadline to enter the juried poster competition for the
second Water for Food international conference. Faculty and students who
participate in the poster session will receive free registration ($100
savings) for the May 2-5 event sponsored by the University of Nebraska and

10. Limited Submission - NSF STEP
The application deadline for the Limited Submission - NSF Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program (STEP)
is Aug. 17 for the letter of intent, and Sept. 28 for the full proposal.
An institution that awards baccalaureate degrees is allowed to submit only
one Type 1 proposal, or to be part of only one consortium submitting a
Type 1 proposal. There are no restrictions on the number of Type 2
proposals that an individual or organization may submit. If you are
interested in developing a Type 1 proposal, complete a Notification of

11. Limited Submission - NSF Improvements to Biological Res Collections
The application deadline for the Limited Submission - NSF Improvements to
Biological Research Collections (BRC) is July 23. In any single round of
the BRC competition, only one proposal may be submitted from any
individual collection within an organization. Organizations that house
multiple collections, submitting proposals from more than one collection,
should engage in internal planning activities in order to prioritize the
needs of the several collections such that the organization does not
submit a multiplicity of proposals to any one BRC competition. If you are
interested in developing a proposal, complete a Notification of Intent to

14. Morrill Hall 'Sunday with a Scientist' Program on Water March 21
The State Museum will present a program on Nebraska's water resources as
part of its 'Sunday with a Scientist' series from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. March
21 at Morrill Hall. "Nebraska's Greatest Treasure" will be led by water
educators from the UNL Water Center, The Groundwater Foundation, and the
Mayor's Water Conservation Task Force. Kids and families will have the
opportunity to examine the science behind various issues related to our
state's complex and abundant water resources, including groundwater,
surface water, drought, conservation, and more.

15. Central Plains Severe Weather Symposium and Family Weatherfest
The 10th Annual Central Plains Severe Weather Symposium and Family
Weatherfest will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 27 in Hardin Hall,
3310 Holdrege Street, East Campus. The event will include a day of family
fun and weather education. Meet local weathercasters, visit the storm
theater, attend photography workshops, view the weather balloon launch,
and shop at the Nebraska Maps and More Store for special wild weather

16. Gender, Politics, and Identity in Post-Conflict Rwanda
This final event in the Women's and Gender Studies Program Spring
Colloquium series will be held at 3:30 p.m. March 31 in the Nebraska Union
(room posted). The panelists will discuss their experiences while in
Rwanda in July 2009. Of particular interest to the panelists were the
testimonials they heard from the women survivors of 1994 genocide of Tutsi
and the ways in which they are contributing to the efforts of
reconstruction and reconciliation.

31. La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet opening Friday at the Ross
* La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet (March 19-25) - A behind the scenes
look at one of the world's great ballet companies. La Danse shows how a
ballet company functions from administration, technical support, and
classes, to the rehearsal and performance of seven ballets.
* Now Playing: The Last Station (March 12-25) - In 1910, famed novelist
Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer) and his wife Sofya (Helen Mirren)
vehemently disagree over the rights to Tolstoy's literary legacy. Sofya
believes her husband should bequeath them to her upon his death, while
Tolstoy's chief disciple, Chertkov (Paul Giamatti), has nearly convinced
the writer to sign the rights over to the Russian people. To this end,
Chertkov inserts a spy (James McAvoy) into Tolstoy's household, who
promptly falls for one of the novelist's daughters.
