Research Projects

• The Role of Fracture Surface Topography and Friction in Dynamic Response of Armor Ceramics: This research project is supported by the US Army Research Office. The work involves combined efforts in dynamic experiment, microscopic examination, material modeling, and numerical simulations to study the effects of fracture surface topography and friction on the evolution of shear damage in high-strength ceramics under impulsive loading.

• Polycrystal Modeling of Ceramics Subjected to High Strain Rates and Pressures:  This joint project (in collaboration with Prof. Wu) is supported by the US Army Research Office and UNL Center for Materials Research and Analysis.  The work involves research in three areas:  1) microfracture and microplasticity in ceramics under high confinement and high strain rates, 2) two- and three-dimensional modeling and simulations of the Voronoi polycrystals, and 3) finite element analysis to investigate mesoscopic deformation and damage evolution in polycrystalline ceramics subjected to high-pressure dynamic loading.

• Characterization of the Transient Large-Deformation Response of Polymer Melts at High Shear Rates.

• Mixed Atomistic and Continuum (Finite Element) Analysis of Grain Boundary Structures.
