NEXT AIA LECTURE WILL FOCUS ON THE BATTLEFIELD SITES OF CUBA FROM THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR

Lincoln, Neb.- The Lincoln-Omaha Society of the Archaeological Institute of America presents its third lecture of the 2005-2006 season on the battlefield sites of Cuba from the Spanish-American War. Dr. Douglas Scott of the Midwest Archeological Center, National Park Center in Lincoln, and UNL Professor Peter Bleed will present a one-hour lecture entitled "A Brief Encounter in Cuba:' An Archaeological Survey of the Cuban Battlefields of the Spanish-American War " on Monday, November 7 at 7:30pm in Richards Hall Room 15 on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln city campus.

Battlefield archaeology is one of the most dynamic subjects of modern archaeology today. War, fighting, and conflict are truly of consequence in human history. Battles leave behind a record that archaeologists are now able to record and analyze in order to reach a deeper understanding of past conflicts. Bleed and Scott, under sponsorship of a National Geographic travel grant, visited the battlefields of the 1898 campaign around Santiago de Cuba in April 2005. The Santiago campaign of 1898 was a brief but very important event in US military history as it was one of the first battles of the 20th Century. The lecturers will discuss their findings of battle site conditions, archaeological potential, and how the monuments to the war contribute to a misperception of the war that many Americans hold today.
