UNL MFA CERAMICS ALUMNI EXHIBITION OPENS OCTOBER 17

Lincoln, Neb.- The Department of Art and Art History recognizes the achievements of its most recent ceramics alumni with the exhibition "UNL MFA Ceramics:  A Decade 1993-2003."

The exhibition opens Monday, October 17 and continues through November 17 in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery on the first floor of Richards Hall on the city campus. An opening reception will be held Monday, October 24, from 5-7pm in the Gallery.

Eleven recent alumni will participate in the exhibition. They are:  Leigh Cohen (MFA 2000), Ellen Huie (MFA 2002), Matt Kelleher (MFA 1999), Michael Morgan (MFA 1993), Kari Radasch (MFA 2003), Monica Ripley (MFA 2003), Micki Skudlarczyk (MFA 2002), Amy Smith (MFA 2000), Michael Strand (MFA 1999), Charles Timm-Ballard (MFA 1993), and Chad Wolf (MFA 1999s).

1993 was the year both Morgan and Timm-Ballard graduated. Professor of Art Gail Kendall was the single faculty member in ceramics. Today, the ceramics program has three faculty members and eight MFA candidates. Ceramics applicants constitute 60 percent of all graduate student applications to the Department of Art and Art History.

Professor of Art Gail Kendall said that she and Professor Emeritus and Gallery Curator Joseph M. Ruffo chose the years 1993-2003 so that visitors to the Gallery would see work that they had not just seen in the context of an MFA exhibition.

" I have been privileged to work with some extremely creative individuals within the context of our MFA program in ceramics," Kendall said. "The years 1993-2003 include students that came to the program before the arrival of my two colleagues, Pete Pinnell (1995) and Eddie Dominguez (1998), to a recent point when our program had 11 candidates. Many of these students have been outstanding and have developed significant careers post-graduate school."

Visitors will likely recognize names they remember from past departmental exhibitions and pottery sales.

" I hope the public will take as much pleasure noting the evolution of these young artists' work as I do pride in their accomplishments," Kendall said.

Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday, noon to 5pm.

Other upcoming events in the ceramics program this semester include a visit by University of Minnesota Professor of Art Mark Pharis and University of California-Davis Professor of Art Annabeth Rosen October 24-26. Pharis is a highly acclaimed potter who has influenced an entire generation of ceramists. Rosen is a sculptor whose work is highly textural and uses repetition and multiples in dramatic installations.

Pharis and Rosen will do demonstrations in Richards Hall Room 118 on October 24, from 9-11:30am and 2:30-4:30pm and October 25, from 1-2:15pm. Rosen will present a slide lecture on October 24, from 1-2pm in Richards Hall Room 15. Pharis will present a slide lecture on October 25, from 2:30-3:30pm in the 2nd floor critique space in Richards Hall. All of these events are free and open to the public.

The Fall Pottery Sale will be held Friday, December 9, from 9am-6pm and Saturday, December 10, from 9am-5pm in Richards Hall Room 118.
