The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts celebrated its annual Alumni Weekend April 22-24, 2005.

"All of us in the College look forward to the Alumni Weekend with much enthusiasm each year, as it is a special time in which the extended College family can get together to celebrate the accomplishments of students, faculty and alumni, and to reflect on the special things that the College has accomplished throughout the year," said Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts Dean Giacomo Oliva.

The centerpiece of the weekend was the College's Honors Day Dinner on Saturday, April 23 in the Johnny Carson Theater. More than 150 people attended to celebrate faculty, student and alumni achievements.

More than 20 awards and recognitions were presented, including the Alumni Achievement Awards, which recognize alumni in Art, Music and Theatre who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and overall professional excellence; the Award of Merit, which honors those who have made contributions to the College but who are not necessarily alumni of the college; and the Student Leadership Awards, which are presented to currently enrolled students or recent graduates who have demonstrated leadership in academics or in student life.

Alumni Achievement Award winner Kent Broadhurst, an actor and published playwright, met with Theatre Arts and Art and Art History classes on Thursday and Friday, April 21-22. Broadhurst received his degree in art, but was recognized for his theatre arts accomplishments. His screenplay for "Wild Iris," produced by Showtime and Paramount, directed by Dan Petrie, starred Gena Rowlands, Laura Linney, Fred Ward and Emile Hirsch. Linney won the 2002 Best Actress Emmy in dramatic film for television.

Alumni Achievement Award winner Col. Gary F. Lamb was in School of Music classes on Friday afternoon, April 22. Lamb is Leader and Commander of "Pershing's Own" United States Army Band.

There was also an alumni performance on Saturday, April 23 in the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery auditorium featuring music and theatre alumni.

The School of Music also marked three anniversaries during this weekend: The School of Music's 110th Anniversary, the 120th Anniversary of the Symphony Orchestra and the 125th Anniversary of UNL Bands.
