ARTS ENTREPRENEURSHIP WORKSHOP IS FEBRUARY 3RD

The Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts and the College of Business Administration's Nebraska Center for Entrepreneurship will present the annual Arts Entrepreneurship Day on Saturday, Feb. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lied Center for Performing Arts. Arts Entrepreneurship Day highlights career opportunities for arts students outside of teaching and performing. This day-long event will feature sessions, including everything from making money from your art, obtaining financing, incorporation, protecting artists' rights, and accounting. Professionals from the visual, musical and theatrical arts will give insight on what it's really like in the arts business world.

Maria Schneider, 2005 Grammy-Award winning composer and entrepreneur, will be the keynote speaker at this year's event. Schneider studied at the Eastman School of Music and her orchestra, The Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra, has been invited to perform in concert halls throughout Europe, Brazil and Macau. (The Maria Schneider Orchestra performs at 7:30pm on Feb. 3 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.) Her award-winning album, "Concert in the Garden," was the first Grammy-winning album with internet-only sales.

Other speakers will include Michael Drapkin, the Founder and Executive Director of the Brevard Conference on Entrepreneurship in Music at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina; UNL Professor of Law Robert Denicola; Rick Wallace, the Executive Director of Community Development Resources; and Glenn Friendt, Director of the UNL Center for Entrepreneurship.

There will also be a panel discussion on "Certificate in Arts Entrepreneurship" that will include Hixson-Lied Endowed Dean Giacomo Oliva, Department of Art and Art History Chairman Ed Forde, School of Music Director John W. Richmond, Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film Director Paul Steger, the members of the Chiara String Quartet, and School of Music Senior Lecturer Ann Chang-Barnes.

"I am pleased to see the outstanding response from the greater Lincoln community to this event," Richmond said. "It's a convocation in the best sense of the word."

The cost for the workshop is $15 for the general public in advance (by Feb. 1) and $20 at the door. The cost for students and faculty is $10 in advance (by Feb. 1) and $15 at the door.
