| Dear Friends, Welcome to the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln! Our College was formed on July 1, 1993 in an effort to unify the arts on our campus, and although young in years, the legacy of its faculty, students and alumni from the Department of Art and Art History, the School of Music, and the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film is a rich one that reaches back over one hundred years. Since its formation, the College has steadily become an essential focal point for the fine and performing arts on the UNL campus, as well as in Lincoln community. In addition to providing a comprehensive array of well-established and widely recognized degree programs in the arts disciplines, our College works in collaboration with its five program affiliate organizations to offer numerous opportunities for the wider campus population to experience the fine and performing arts in fresh and unique ways. Through its varied partnerships with other campus academic units, the College also extends the outreach and engagement mission of the University by providing an increasing number of specialized programs and activities that touch individuals throughout the state of Nebraska. In January of 2000, Miss Christina Hixson, the sole trustee of the Lied Foundation Trust, announced a gift of $18 million to the University of Nebraska Foundation to support College and its affiliated units, and the College became the only named College at the University. Over the past three years, the proceeds from the Endowment fund established with this generous gift have been focused on initiatives that are designed to enhance and deepen our programs and activities, that showcase and reward excellence and growth in teaching and in research and creative endeavors, and that would otherwise not be possible without the Endowment's support. Coupled with additional matching funding from a variety of sources, the impact of the Endowment on the College's commitment to achieving and rewarding excellence has exceeded $1.5 million. Let me take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in our College, and to invite you to take a few minutes to learn more about us. Whether you are a prospective student, an alumnus a friend, or a current member of our faculty, staff or student body, we hope you will find what you seeking in the pages that follow. With warm regards, |
