Alumni Achievement Award in Art
Carol Haerer (1954 BFA)
Hoosick Falls, New York

After receiving her BFA from UNL in 1954, nationally recognized contemporary artist Carol Haerer received her MA in 1958 from the University of California at Berkeley. She has taught at (among others) New York University, the University of Vermont, Parsons School of Design, Fordham University, and Vermont College. Her museum collections include The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; Oakland Art Museum; Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery in Lincoln; and the University of Arizona. Her public collections include IBM Corporation of America in Florida; Home Box Office in New York; Prudential Life Insurance Co. in New York; and Citibank in New York.

Robert Nelson (1963 BME and 1964 MM)
Houston, Texas

Robert Nelson is Professor of Composition and Theory at the University of Houstons Moores School of Music. He received his BME and MM degrees from the University of Nebraska and his DMA from the University of Southern California where he studied composition with Ingolf Dahl and Halsey Stevens and opera production with Walter Ducloux. He is co-author of a number of widely adopted theory books. As a composer, he has written extensively for the musical theater. A Room With a View, with libretto by Buck Ross, was premiered by the University of Houston Opera Theatre and was subsequently performed by the University of NebraskaLincoln and Southwest Texas State University. Ross and Nelson have most recently collaborated on Shadows and Music, a dramatic recital piece for soprano, mezzo-soprano, violin and piano. An experienced coach and conductor, Nelson served for many years as the musical director for the University of Houston School of Music Opera Workshop, during which time he conducted performances of Harlequinade, Comedy on the Bridge and The Wandering Scholar. In addition to works for the theater, Nelson has also written extensively for film and television. Among his solo vocal works are Here I Am At Last, written to celebrate the 80th birthday of Elena Nikolaidi; Dark Ponies, to original texts by Sidney Berger celebrating pioneer women; and Preacher Man.

Daniel Proett (1977 MFA)
Sunland, California
Daniel Proett has had a successful designing career in television, films and theatre. Before leaving UNL, he designed two seasons for the Nebraska Repertory Theatre. In the fall of 1977, he moved to New York City where he continued his studies in design at the Polakov Studios in Greenwich Village. He was resident designer for the George Street Playhouse and Crossroads Theatre in New Brunswick, N.J., for 10 years. During this time he served as associate professor at Rutgers University. Proett and his wife, costume designer Nancy L. Konrardy, relocated to Los Angeles in 1989. He worked on NBCs Days of Our Lives, Another World and Late Night with David Letterman. ABC hired him to art direct David Lynchs Twin Peaks. He has served as art director on ABCs Daytime Dramas General Hospital for 12 years along with Port Charles for the last five years. His past honors include two Emmy nominations, a Drama Critics Circle Award and an Audelco Award.
