JOHN RICHMOND NAMED SCHOOL OF MUSIC DIRECTOR Lincoln, Neb.-Dr. John W. Richmond, Professor of Music and Interim Director of the School of Music at the University of South Florida, has been named Director of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Music. Pending approval by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, Richmond will begin his term on July 1, 2003. ![]() John Richmond Richmond earned a bachelor's degree (summa cum laude) in music education from William Jewell College, a master's degree in conducting from the Conservatory of Music at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, and a Ph.D. degree in music education from Northwestern University. In addition, he studied conducting and music education in Austria at the Vienna International Music Center and the Orff Schulwerk Institute (Salzburg). "I am delighted and deeply honored to join the University of Nebraska School of Music," Richmond said. "UNL has a long and distinguished national reputation in music, the faculty is truly exceptional, and the future of the arts at UNL is very bright. Dean Oliva and I have worked in other settings in the past. I know him to be a gifted colleague and an inspired leader. On a personal note, my wife, Jill, and I will be coming home' in a real sense. We are both native Missourians. It will be wonderful to be back in the Midwest once again and so close to our parents at this time in our lives." Richmond's research focuses on arts education policy, legal issues in arts education, and the philosophy of music education, with recent foci on professional ethics in arts education and the intersections of aesthetic and religious knowing. He is published widely in such journals as the Journal of Research in Music Education, Research Perspectives in Music Education, Arts Education Policy Review (and its earlier incarnation-Design for Arts in Education), the International Journal of Music Education, The Journal of Aesthetic Education (Editorial Consultant, 1996-99), and the Choral Journal, as well as a number of research monographs, including On the Nature of the Musical Experience. He is a Founding Director of the Suncoast Music Education Forum, the founding Editor of the Florida Choral News, and served as the Conference Director for the 1994 World Conference of the International Society for Music Education (ISME -the music education arm of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization). Richmond recently completed the editing of the "Policy and Philosophy Research Section" of the upcoming second edition of the Handbook of Research in Music Teaching and Learning (New York, N.Y.: Oxford University Press and MENC, 2002), and also wrote the chapter on "Law Research and Music Education." Richmond replaces Lawrence R. Mallett, who resigned in 2001 to become Director of the School of Music at the University of Kansas. Robert Fought will continue to serve as interim director of the School of Music until Richmond's term begins. |
