UNL PROFESSOR EMERITUS JOHN MORAN WILL BE INDUCTED POSTHUMOUSLY INTO THE NMEA HALL OF FAME

Lincoln, Neb.-UNL Professor Emeritus John Moran, a former administrator in the School of Music, will be inducted posthumously into the Nebraska Music Educators Hall of Fame. The award will be presented during the annual awards banquet on Nov. 17. Moran's wife, Janelle, will be accepting the award.

The Nebraska Music Educators Association Hall of Fame Award is the most prestigious honor that can be bestowed on any Nebraska Music Educator, past or present. The recipient is nominated by peers in the profession and former students.

Moran was a native of David City, Neb. He received his B.M.E. and M.M. degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He began his teaching career at David City and remained until he was hired as a K-12 vocal music teacher for the Central City schools in 1953. In 1955, he became choral conductor at UNL's University High School, remaining there until it closed in 1967.

While at University High, he also conducted the UNL Freshman Madrigal Singers, regarded by many as being as popular as the future Scarlet and Cream Singers. He was also the longtime administrator of the three-week UNL summer music camp, known then as All-State. Moran served first as Assistant Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences and then became Director of the School of Music in 1972.

The School of Music became an 'Area of Excellence' under his tenure, allowing additional funding for programs and faculty. He also redesigned the keyboard skills program.

He died in 1984 at the age of 54.

In 1986, the School of Music organized the Moran Woodwind Quintet, the resident faculty woodwind quintet of the School of Music, and named it in his honor.
