Lincoln, Neb. - The University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Music and Lincoln Southeast High School present UNL's Jazz Ensembles I & II, under the direction of Dr. Paul Haar and Dr. Eric Richards, with LSE's Jazz Ensemble I, under the direction of Robert Krueger, in a concert featuring Benny Carter's Kansas City Suite. Dr. Anthony Bushard will be guest narrator for this jazz concert that will spotlight one of standards of jazz music by the legendary Benny Carter. This program was originally scheduled for December 2009 and was cancelled due to weather.
The Kansas City Suite, composed by Benny Carter, was recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra in 1960 ("Kansas City Suite - the Music of Benny Carter"). It is comprised of ten marvelous pieces, each different in style and tempo, but all very much in the "Basie Bag." The Kansas City Suite is one of Carter's middle period masterpieces. Count Basie recorded it for Roulette in 1960 with his "new testament" band that included Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, Marshall Royal, Benny Powell, Al Grey and the great latter-day Basie rhythm section.
