Lincoln, Neb. - The School of Music opera program presents the regional premier of The Light in the Piazza this week on Friday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, Nov. 14 at 3:00 pm. The musical is being directed by Alisa Belflower, and conducted by Tyler Goodrich White.

The musical is the work of composer Adam Guettel, grandson of Richard Rodgers (the celebrated composer of Oklahoma!, Carousel, The Sound of Music among others) and son of Mary Rodgers (composer of the musical Once Upon a Mattress). The musical garnered six Tony Awards after opening on Broadway at the Lincoln Center in 2005.

Guettel's rich musical heritage shines in an elegant score, which blurs the line between opera and musical theatre. Set in 1953 in Italy, a mother and daughter from Winston-Salem, North Carolina spend a summer-escape in Florence, where love blooms amidst breathtaking beauty and an unfamiliar culture. Learning to speak Italian doesn't bridge the distance between the two cultures as effectively as love proves to do.

An innocent romance between the young Italian, Fabrizio, and the American, Clara, seems to challenge the beliefs and ignite the passions within both families. A fresh, romantic musical in which every characters' most vulnerable secrets are exposed to the light, The Light in the Piazza.

Tickets: General admission $20, Students and seniors $10
