UNL CERAMICS GRADUATE STUDENT WINS PRESTIGIOUS FELLOWSHIP FROM THE ARCHIE BRAY FOUNDATION

Lincoln, Neb.-University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Art and Art History graduate student Joseph Pintz has been awarded The Lincoln Fellowship from the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana. This highly competitive fellowship, which awards $5,000 and a one-year residency at the Foundation, is awarded annually to ceramic artists who demonstrate exceptional merit and promise.

"Time is the primary 'gift' of a residency," Pintz said. "By allowing artists to work without distraction, they are able to focus intensely and push their work to new levels. As I finish my Master of Fine Arts degree, I will be able to continue building momentum within a supportive community of artists."

Pintz is the recipient of a John W. McDonald and Othmer Graduate Fellowships at UNL. He will receive his Master of Fine Arts degree this May. His MFA Thesis Exhibition, "Poetics of the Commonplace" will run March 20-28 in the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery in Richards Hall at UNL.

He received honorable mention in "The Art of Fine Craft Exhibition" at Nebraska Wesleyan University in 2005 and a juror's award in "Pots: Objects of Virtue" at the Bedford Gallery in Walnut Creek, California, in 2005.

Pintz received his Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and urban studies at Northwestern University and did post-baccalaureate studies at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Last year, UNL graduate student Koi Neng Liew (M.F.A. 2005) received the Bray's Taunt Fellowship, which was also a $5,000 prize and a one-year residency at the Foundation.

"The Department of Art and Art History can be justly proud of these accomplished graduates," said Professor of Art Gail Kendall.

The Archie Bray Foundation was the first artist residency program in the United States devoted solely to ceramics. For more than 50 years, the Bray has brought together artists with diverse backgrounds and approaches to the medium, creating an environment conducive to artistic exchange and individual expression.
