Looking for Graduate Admissions?

Students must be accepted into the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts in order to major in Art, Art History, Dance, Music, or Theatre. Students gain entrance into the College through a dual process of review using the UNL general admission requirements and specific college admission requirements.

For general admission students must apply and be accepted to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln through the UNL on-line application.

Within the College of Fine & Performing Arts some majors and emphasis areas require further action by the student, in the form of an in-person audition, or a special application with supporting materials to the department office. See audition dates and special application deadlines below.



HIXSON-LIED COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS

In addition to meeting the University Core Course Requirements, all students must meet the following criteria to be admitted to the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts:


College Admission Criteria
New Freshmen ACT 22 (composite) or SAT 1020 (Critical Reading and Math)
 
Transfer Students Completed twelve or more semester credits from a postsecondary institution; Cumulative GPA 2.5 and Semester GPA 2.0
  • (Transfer students with System GPA: Cumulative GPA 2.5 with Semester GPA 2.0 and System GPA 2.5)
  • (Theatre majors with an emphasis in Film and New Media: Cumulative GPA 3.0 and Semester GPA 3.0)
Readmit Students UNL System Cumulative GPA 2.5
(Theatre majors with an emphasis in Film and New Media: UNL System Cumulative GPA 3.0)
International Freshmen ONE of the following:
  • TOEFL 550 (paper) or 79 (internet-based)
  • SAT verbal sub-score 470
  • ACT English sub-score 20
  • IELTS 6.6
  • UNL English Placement Exam (EPE) 85
International Transfer Cumulative GPA 2.5 with Semester GPA 2.0 and ONE of the following:
  • TOEFL 550 (paper) or 79 (internet-based)
  • SAT verbal sub-score 470
  • ACT English sub-score 20
  • IELTS 6.6
  • UNL English Placement Exam (EPE) 85


PLEASE NOTE - VERY IMPORTANT
"Pre" designations only apply during the application process. Any Pre-Music, Pre-Music Education, Pre-Dance, or Pre-Theatre student who has been admitted to UNL, but not yet admitted into the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts by March 31 (for Fall/Summer matriculation) and October 31 (for Spring matriculation) will automatically be admitted to the Exploratory and Pre-Professional Advising Center as an undeclared major. After being admitted, students can apply for a change of major into the College once the College Requirements and any Additional Requirements by Major have been met. (Note: this policy does not apply to art and art history majors.)

NOTE: Non-majors may enroll in music ensembles, beginning dance and theatre classes, music classes for non-majors, and all art history classes. To enroll in all other courses offered in the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts, non-majors must obtain special permission from the instructor.



ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS BY MAJOR

Art and Art History

No auditions or special applications.


Music and Dance

An audition, by appointment only, is required for majors and minors. These are generally held in January and February for the upcoming fall semester, or by special appointment.
