About the Program
Stuttering Therapy Step-By-Step was designed to offer logically arranged, "cafeteria selections" of ideas and exercises known to promote fluency. The exercises are arranged in what is believed to be their order of difficulty. Once basic skills needed for THE METHOD are learned, the exercises, with their continual call for practice, simply serve to enhance control of the speech and voice mechanism.
The Method
The method is an organized system of strategies designed to teach stutterers how to regain control over their speech mechanisms, making use of research findings regarding the influences on stuttering of such factors as social/emotional stress, tension in the vocal cords as well as in other parts of the speech mechanism, faulty breathing, speech rate and feared sounds The method serves to re-train the three muscle groups used in speaking: breath-controlling muscles, voice-producing muscles, and speech-sound-producing muscles. It not only deals with habitual patterns of stuttered speech, it also addresses habitual patterns of stuttered thinking about speech.
