Doctoral Hooding and Commencement Ceremony

The doctoral hooding ceremony is a wonderful opportunity for families and friends to share in the special moment when doctoral students receive their hoods. Doctoral candidates and their academic advisors participate together in the event, which symbolizes the final recognition of the candidates' scholarly accomplishments.

A reception for doctoral candidates, faculty members, family and friends follows the ceremony.

Registration

Students must pre-register in order to participate in the hooding ceremony. Registration materials will be sent to all graduating doctoral students. Contact Eva Bachman at ebachman1@unl.edu or (402)472-8669 with questions about the hooding ceremony.

Academic Regalia

Students will receive a packet regarding graduation regalia from the UNL Office of Graduation Services about one month prior to graduation.

Alternatively, if you wish to purchase a higher-quality cap, gown, and hood for use in your future academic career and wear them in the hooding ceremony and commencement, please contact the University Bookstore about ordering. Plan ahead — the higher-quality regalia may take several weeks to arrive.

You may order caps, gowns, hoods, and graduation announcements in person or by mail from the University Bookstore, General Merchandising Area, Lower Level, Nebraska Union on City Campus. Their phone number is (402)472-7300; ask for Michelle Edwards.

Commencement

New for May 2008 and beyond: The Doctoral Hooding Ceremony will now also include the commencement exercises for all doctoral students. This means that you will receive both your academic hood and your University of Nebraska diploma in this exclusive Doctoral Hooding and Commencement ceremony.

This is a change from years past, so please be sure that your family and friends are aware that Friday will be the only commencement ceremony for doctoral degree recipients, and that you will not participate in the general university commencement on the following Saturday.

Graduating Students with Disabilities

Graduating students using wheelchairs, crutches, or similar aids may require special accommodation for marching and seating arrangements. To ensure full participation in the hooding ceremony, please report any special needs to Eva Bachman at ebachman1@unl.edu or (402)472-8669 at least two weeks before the ceremony.
