Matching practice to purpose means selecting classroom activities and instructional strategies that will be most effective in helping students master the subject matter of your course.
Instructors who integrate a variety of teaching strategies are more successful in meeting the needs of students with varied learning styles and in fostering learning through several modes of information processing. Some courses and some types of teaching assignments may require more of one strategy than another (if you are a recitation section instructor, for example, you may rely most heavily on discussion; if you teach a lab section, you'll depend more heavily on active learning strategies).
