The Essentials

1

Claim your account

After you apply:
  1. Expect to receive email from TrueYou within 1 business day.
  2. With the temporary password from that email, sign into TrueYou.
  3. Set your new password.
  4. Answer your security questions in case you need to reset your password someday.
If you have recent applications, enrollment, or employment at any school in the University of Nebraska System (UNL, UNK, UNO, UNMC, NCTA) or the Nebraska State College System (CSC, PSC, WSC) you may already have claimed and set up your account, in which case you don't need to do this again.

2

Check your application status, upload transcripts

After you've claimed your account:
  1. Sign into MyRED and select Graduate Application Status.  (It's on the Applicant tab, under Admissions.)
  2. View the status of your application and upload transcripts if eligible.
The Graduate Application Status page covers status and requirements for the Office of Graduate Studies. Other requirements may exist at the departmental level.

3

Enroll for classes

After you're admitted and you've claimed your account:
  1. Sign into MyRED.
  2. On the Student tab, select the Enroll subtab.
  3. Select Enroll in Classes, on the right side under Manage.
  4. Select your classes and follow the prompts. If a class appears in your "shopping cart" but not in your schedule, you're not enrolled in it yet.

Other Features

MyRED's Student tab has many features. Here are a few that we hope all enrolled students will utilize:

  • On the Records subtab, under Manage:
    • Addresses, Phone Numbers, and Email Addresses. Keep these updated so UNL can contact you if needed.
    • Emergency Contact. Tell us who to contact in the unlikely event that something happens to you.
  • On the Additional Services subtab:
    • UNL Alert. Choose ways for UNL's automated alert system to inform you about snow days and other unusual hazards on campus.

Frequently Asked Questions

    • Yes, but I forgot the answers to my security questions. — Contact the UNL Helpdesk to request a password reset. When you get your new password, be sure to also update the answers to your security questions so you can remember them.
What if I need to use GAMES for my department's supplemental application information?
If you're applying to a department that uses the departmental Graduate Application Management and Evaluation System (GAMES), you'll receive a welcome email from your department when your GAMES access is available, typically on the next business day after you apply.

You'll sign into GAMES directly, using the same NU ID and password that get you into TrueYou and MyRED.
What's MyRED? What happened to WAM?
MyRED, our new student self-service site, opened to applicants and current students in December 2009. The content of our old self-service site, What About Me (WAM), has been integrated into MyRED.
What's TrueYou? Why do I have to do something in TrueYou before I can get into MyRED?
TrueYou is a secure system for managing your account credentials. Initially, you'll set your password and answer a few security questions. If you ever forget your password, want to change your answers to security questions, or need to set a new password, you'll go back to TrueYou for that.

TrueYou is shared by the University of Nebraska and the Nebraska State College System, so if you are already an applicant or student at another NU or NSCS school, your TrueYou account setup may already be complete.

Parent/Guest Access

How can I enable someone else to see my grades or pay my bill?
  1. Sign into TrueYou.
  2. Click Manage Parent/Guest Access, then New.
  3. Enter your guest's name, create their password, select which options they should have access to, and click Save.
  4. Inform your guest of their ID and password and point them toward http://myred.unl.edu/ to sign in.
What if I'm a guest and I forgot my ID or password?
Talk to the student who created your guest account. The student can tell you your ID and create a new password for you.

Technical Troubleshooting

When I click a MyRED link to WAM, I get an error. How do I get to WAM?
If the error says "you haven't logged in or your login has expired" or "login invalid/timed out", it probably means that your browser's security settings prevented WAM from setting a cookie. Here are 2 ways around the problem:
  1. Tell your web browser to allow cookies from wam.unl.edu. Different browsers put these controls in different places, so here are examples of how to get to them:
    • In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options. Select the Privacy tab, then click the Sites button.
    • In Firefox, go to Tools > Options. Select the Privacy tab, then click the Exceptions button.
Then type "unl.edu" for the address and click Allow. Click OK to close your settings window(s). Try the WAM link again.
  2. If you're not feeling tech-savvy, try a different computer or a different web browser. It may have different security settings.
I was told to clear my cache. How do I do that?
Your browser cache contains temporary copies of internet files that your browser uses to be more efficient. Each browser has its own way of clearing cache. For example:
  • In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Delete Browsing History and click the Delete Files button at the top, for Temporary Internet Files.
  • In Firefox, go to Tools > Clear Recent History and make sure the boxes for Cache and Active Logins are checked, then click Clear All. You may want to have all the other boxes unchecked.
  • In Safari, click the Settings icon (looks like a gear) in the upper right, select Reset Safari, make sure the Empty the Cache box is checked, and click Cancel. You may want to have all the other boxes unchecked.
If that doesn't solve your problem, contact the UNL Helpdesk.
