Lincoln offers a diverse community that attracts students and professionals from all over the world.

Anchored by its community centers which cater to Hispanic, Asian, Native American, and African American cultures, the city of Lincoln encompasses an environment that supports and values diversity. Lincoln is also a national refugee resettlement center with many ethnic stores and places which conduct business in languages other than English. UNL's Institute for Ethnic Studies provides a multicultural resource guide with listings of local markets, restaurants, and more.

Lincoln hosts several annual festivals such as Juneteenth Celebration, Celebrate Lincoln, and Jazz in June, all which highlight the cultures and traditions of the community. The National Association for Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) host active chapters in Lincoln. Several multicultural fraternities and sororities are also involved on campus and in the community.

The city of Omaha, just 50 miles northeast of Lincoln, is also a mecca of diversity and cultural activities. Omaha is home to El Museo Latino, the Loves Jazz & Arts Center, the Holland Performing Arts Center, Orpheum Theater, and the Qwest Center among other venues which host events. Many Lincoln residents travel to Omaha to attend events at these venues as well as sporting events, concerts, religious services, and other cultural activities. A larger selection of shopping and ethnic salons can also be found in Omaha.
