Life in Lincoln

Safety

The city of Lincoln was ranked as one of the safest cities with a population of more than 100,000 in CQ Press's annual America's Safest (and Most Dangerous) Cities report. The city's average crime rate compared to national averages appears higher in some comparison groups, but the city experiences low crime rates.

Campus crime statistics are accessible from University of Nebraska-Lincoln Campus Police and city statistics from the City of Lincoln Police Department. Both provide current information, interactive maps, and resources for personal safety. Emergency phones are strategically placed around campus and NU on Wheels provides a safe ride home at night.

Emergency preparedness is also very important on college campuses. In the event of an emergency, UNL Alert, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's emergency warning system, will provide information via devices and addresses you designate such as cell phones (text and voice), landline phones, PDAs, two-way radios, and e-mail addresses.

Beyond rankings and statistics, graduate students report that they feel safe and comfortable on the campus and in the community.
