Life in Lincoln

Transportation

All you need to know to navigate the streets of Lincoln is how to count and the ABCs — most streets adhere to a grid pattern and many are lettered or numbered.

Driving

If you drive to campus, plan to register your car and to make arrangements for parking. There is no free parking on City or East Campus. UNL Parking and Transit Services offers several options for students from surface lots and garage parking to monthly rates and semester permits. Downtown garages offer hourly and daily rates and metered parking surrounds parts of campus.

Full-time students who maintain current vehicle registration in their home state do not need to register their vehicle with the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles.

Biking

Many graduate students choose bicycling or walking as alternatives to driving. Lincoln has 93 miles of paved commuter trails and biking is also a very popular recreation activity in Lincoln.

Bike lanes were expanded in 2006 to accommodate bicycle commuting, and the League of American Bicyclists offers safety reminders and tips for biking to school or work.

Public Transportation

The city transit system, StarTran, is accessible from almost any part of the city and is free for UNL students. Get your complimentary bus pass from UNL Parking and Transit Services. Buses run Monday through Saturday, from approximately 5:15 a.m. to 7:10 p.m. Take note, start and end times vary depending on the route and time of year. Schedules are available at StarTran's Web site.

Lincoln also has an Amtrak station and taxi companies — Capital Cab, Servant Cab, and Yellow Cab. NU on Wheels, a program which provides a free ride home for any registered UNL student, operates from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. seven days a week, excluding the winter holiday closedown and summer sessions.

Air Transportation

Only minutes from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, Lincoln Airport offers convenience and ease of travel. Lincoln Airport maintains daily flights on Northwest Airlines and United Airlines.

Only an hour's drive away, Omaha Eppley Airfield provides another option with lower fares (on average) to more destinations. All major airlines fly into Eppley Airfield, including American, Delta, Northwest, Continental, United and US Airways. Several low-fare providers such as Frontier and Southwest also have service to Eppley Airfield. In addition, OmaLink provides daily shuttle service between Lincoln and Omaha at a cost of $39.95 for a one-way ticket.
