Description of Program

Environmental Health, Occupational Health, and Toxicology (EOHT) takes a scientific approach to the environmental concerns of today and tomorrow. It means a better understanding of what is and is not harmful by developing new methods of evaluating risks. At the core is the study of mechanisms by which certain chemicals adversely affect cells.

The joint University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) program offers several unique benefits to students earning a master's or doctoral degree in EOHT. Students gain the opportunity to combine in-depth knowledge of a specific field with a broad perspective on EOHT; to be paired with leading researchers to conduct research in EOHT-related studies; to receive nationally competitive funding including, assistantships with tuition and health insurance benefits; and to attend regularly scheduled seminars, often featuring nationally recognized experts in toxicology and related disciplines.

Areas of study include: carcinogenesis, alcohol toxicity and metal toxicity, DNA damage, human molecular genetics, environment-gene interactions, bioinformatics, immunotoxicology, ecological toxicology, agrochemicals, food toxins, ultratrace determination of biological compounds, and synthetic and mechanistic bio-organic chemistry.
