Steps to Admission
These are the basic steps for an application to a degree program, in which your materials are reviewed both by Graduate Studies and by the Graduate Committee of your intended degree program. The process is shorter for non-degree and intercampus applications.
1. Submission of Application & Materials
Complete the online application form, then send your transcripts and additional required materials by mail. Check with your intended department to learn what additional application materials they require for your degree program.
2. Preliminary Graduate Studies Review
After we have your application, fee, and official transcripts, your file will be ready for a preliminary review by our credentials evaluators. Then either we will send you a notice that your file has been forwarded to the academic department for further review, or we will contact you regarding missing information. You can monitor your application's progress via What About Me (WAM).
3. Departmental Review
The Graduate Committee of each department decides who will be accepted into their program. Your application will be reviewed only after you have submitted all required materials, including letters of recommendation. We recommend that you contact your department to confirm that your file is complete.
4. Final Graduate Studies Review
After the department returns their admission recommendation, Graduate Admissions completes a final review of your file. If you have been required to provide information about funding (for student visa eligibility) or English proficiency, this information will need to be complete before any admission can be finalized.
5. Admission
If you are accepted into the degree program, Graduate Studies will confirm your eligibility and admit you to the University. A Certificate of Admission will be mailed to you with information for new students. If you need a Form I-20 to apply for a student visa, we will also send this form to you at this time.
