Patient Rights and Responsibilities
As a University Health Center patient you have the right to:
- Access care and treatment.
- Consideration, respect and dignity.
- Confidential handling of records and disclosures compliant with FERPA and HIPAA regulations.
- Control the disclosure of your medical records, except as required by law.
- An explanation of your diagnosis and prognosis.
- An explanation of the recommendations for investigation and treatment.
- Refuse any tests or treatment to the extent permitted by law, and be informed of the medical consequences of your decision.
- Request and receive an explanation of charges related to your care.
- Recommend changes in policies and services or to express dissatisfaction with services received by:
- Quality Management and Improvement suggestion boxes.
- Direct contact with the Director of the UHC.
- Using any other resources available through the UNL administrative structure.
- Access to the licensing status of the staff and the accreditation status of the UHC.
- Change provider if another qualified provider is available or request to see the provider of your choice.
As a University Health Center patient you have the responsibility to:
- Provide, to the best of your knowledge, accurate and sufficient information about your medical history.
- Follow our diagnostic and treatment recommendations.
- Accept personal responsibility if you refuse care.
- Abide by UHC rules, regulations and policies.
- Assume financial obligation for services you receive (be aware that non-payment could result in disruption of academic progression).
- Respect the rights of other patients and UHC staff.
- Provide, for emergency contact if you are an unemancipated minor, the name, current address and telephone number of your legal guardian.
