Students Helping Individuals Nurture Esteem
Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2008
Visit the EDAW Page for this year's EDAW schedule of events.
Students Helping Individuals Nurture Esteem (SHINE) is a peer education program created by Eating Disorders Education and Prevention (EDEP). SHINE was formed in an effort to educate students in areas related to the prevention and treatment of eating disorders, and to promote healthful attitudes about self and body image.
SHINE provides several benefits to the University of Nebraska community. Peer educators gain invaluable training and insights into health promotion and education. They use this information to reach the campus population with information pertaining to the prevention, risk factors, and symptoms of eating disorders, how to help a friend with a potential eating disorder, body image concerns, wellness issues (dieting and supplement use), and campus referral information. The peer education program expands on the goals of Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
SHINE's Goals
- To educate students in areas related to the prevention and treatment of eating disorders
- To promote healthy attitudes about self and body image
SHINE's Presentations
SHINE peer educators are trained to give informative presentations in the areas of Eating Disorders, Body Image, Excessive Exercise, Media Advocacy, and Wellness. The presentations offered are:
- Eating Disorders: "New Beginnings: How to Help a Friend" a scenario-based journey on how to recognize the signs and symptoms of anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating, and how to confront the person in need, as well as, where to go for help.
- Media: "Selling Out: The Ideal Body Has a Price Tag" serves to increase awareness of the unrealistic portrayal of men and women bodies in the media by looking at magazine ads and their themes through group exercises.
- Wellness: "Harmful Cocktail: Dieting and Supplements" teaches the audience how to evaluate fad diets and popular supplements used among college students.
- Body Image: "Why Can't Bodies, Just Be Bodies?" defines body image and looks at how an individual perceives oneself through the use of a body image continuum and survey.
