Alcohol Skills Training Program (ASTP) FAQ

What is the difference between BASICS and ASTP?

A big difference is that you will meet individually with one of the Health Center's Alcohol Educators. Both sessions will take place at the Health Center. BASICS is usually reserved for students who have had a second violation, a very serious first incident or there were drugs other than alcohol involved in the incident (ASTP only covers alcohol).

How much does BASICS cost?

The cost is $100. You may charge it to your student account. Like ASTP, you have to pay before the first meeting.

How do I sign up?

You register in person at the University Health Center. As you come in the front door, you will see the business office to your left. Pay there. You can put the charge on your student account if you wish. You will get a receipt. Bring it and your smiling face downstairs to the Community Health Education office. We will sign you up for a class, do the remaining paperwork and answer any questions you have

Is BASICS confidential?

Yes. No information is released to anyone, including parents, without your written consent. This includes the completion letter to the person who referred you. Your completion letter simply says you were there and you completed the requirements. Files are kept in locked cabinets.

Who will I meet with?

You will meet with one of the Alcohol Educators in the Alcohol and Drug Services program in the Health Center. They are sweet people. We are located on the lower level, room 12.

What is expected of me?

You are expected to be on time and attend both sessions as scheduled. If you don't, you will forfeit your registration fee. Ever forfeited $100 before? It hurts badly. We want you to be engaged and come with an open mind. If changes take place in the way you use alcohol (or drugs) it's because you choose to make them. We follow a strict "No Nagging" policy.
