Harriet Turner completed her Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin in 1970 and has taught at Smith and Oberlin colleges. She joined the University of Nebraska in 1991 as Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (1991-2000). Her contributions to literary scholarship have focused on the work of authors who have defined the course of writing in Spain and Latin America to the present day, as in nineteenth and early twentieth-century narrative in Spain; modern novel and short fiction in Latin America ; and translation. Her publications include Galdòs, "Fortunata y Jacinta" (1991), Textos y contextos de Galdòs (co-edited with J. Kronik, 1994), Niebla (co-edited with R. Gullon,, 1965), and a special issue of the journal Letras Peninsulares on the poetics of realism (2000), in additon to over 50 articles and reviews Dr. Turner has served as President of the International Association of Galdos Scholars (1985-88), President of the Executive Committee of the American Departments of Foreign Languages (1995) and Chair of MLA's Committee on Academic Freedom and Professional Rights and Responsibilities (2001). She is a member of several editorial boards and has served as director of several international symposia and conferences.
