Study Abroad Programs

UNL-sponsored Programs

Travel abroad, in most cases accompanied by UNL faculty members:

Exchange Programs

Study as a fully-integrated student at a foreign partner institution for a semester or academic year. Pay tuition to UNL and take classes at the partner institution, while a student from the partner institution takes classes at UNL.

Other Programs

Don't see a specific program you're interested in? You may know of a program sponsored by another U.S. university, or may want to enroll directly at a foreign institution. You'll need to get UNL approval first!

Complete Application Form A and meet with a study abroad advisor in the Office of International Affairs.
You should bring basic information about the program you're interested in:

  • Name of the sponsoring organization and contact information
  • Anticipated date of departure and return
  • Itemized costs of the program (tuition, room and board, fares, personal expenses, etc.)

We'll check to make sure it's possible to use your financial aid, retain your full-time status, and transfer earned credit to UNL.

Your UNL department and academic advisor will make the final determination of course credit approval!

Why Study Abroad?

Studying abroad is more than just "broadening your horizons." It will advance you in more ways than you can imagine - personally, socially, educationally and professionally.

Find Out Who You Are and What You Believe In
Only time away from the comfort zone of home allows you to explore who you are and become more confident in yourself.

Understand Where You're From
You'll gain perspective on different world views while abroad–an appreciation of all that you have at home in the US, and a realization that "the American way" isn't the best in all cases.

Make Friends from Around the World!
Making new acquaintances yields a unique perspective, revealing the differences and similarities between your cultures. The friendships you make may last long after your return to the U.S.

Strengthen Your Social Skills
You'll gain confidence and independence and improve your communication skills, verbal and non-verbal, which improves day-to-day interaction with peers and co-workers.

Truly Learn a Language
Learning a language in a classroom with other novices can't compare to hearing native speakers use the language everyday. By immersing yourself in the language you'll dramatically improve your ability and fluency!

Earn Credit for Your Degree
You'll need course credits for language, liberal arts and science anyway; why not take classes in another country? The courses you take for UNL-approved study abroad programs will transfer back to UNL, so your travel won't delay your degree.

Increase Your Cultural Awareness
See the world's greatest architecture and monuments, try new food, experience a different climate, hear foreign accents. See what you've only seen in postcards and history books!

Build Your Resumé
The world needs internationally educated people. Place yourself ahead of the competition! By studying abroad, you'll show you're eager to learn and willing to try new things.
