Peking University began in 1898 as the Metropolitan University and was the most prestigious institution of higher learning as well as the highest administrative organization of education in China. The institution has continued to be an outstanding institution for Chinese scholars as well as students from home and abroad. Playing an important role in ushering in new ideas, Peking University attains its renowned reputation of intellectual freedom and academic achievements.
In the modern period of reform, Peking University again stands on the forefront of contemporary issues by introducing topics like women’s studies and encouraging a program of international exchange. Since the adoption of the restructuring and open-door policy in the past seventeen years, more than 10,000 international students from 100 countries have studied at Peking University. In addition to the visiting students, there are also high-level international students who are proficient at Chinese language and enrolled in the regular Master’s and Ph.D. programs. Peking University has been widely regarded as an ideal institution for learning Chinese language and culture. Chinese language instruction is provided by experienced language professors to international students at different levels. Specific arrangements are made to assist students who have briefly encountered Chinese language.
Situated in the northwest suburbs of Beijing with a 230 hectares of “garden like” campus, Peking University (called Beida in Chinese) is surrounded by beautiful, natural scenery. To the north of the university are the remains of the Yuan Ming Yuan Palace (old summer palace); to the south are the rolling western mountains, and to the west the Summer Palace. Amidst the shimmering lake and ancient architecture, the campus of Peking University is both quiet and vibrant, an ideal location for studies.
The city of Beijing is the capital of the People’s Republic of China and is the second largest city, next to Shanghai in terms of population. Located on the 40th Parallel, Beijing occupies the same geographic position in China as New York City does in North America. Yet the surrounding mountains and Chinese architecture quickly remind visitors of the cultural heritage of China and its many differences from other countries around the globe. Students attending Peking University will find their study abroad experience enhanced by the cultural and historical riches of this ancient and yet modern city. |
