The University Community
 
In 1967, Sapporo University began with one building and two departments, Economics and Foreign Languages, on its present site in Nishioka. Plans were already under way for expansion the following year when the first classes began. Since then, the university has grown and prospered. Now Sapporo University supports the following Departments: General Education and the Women’s Junior College. Over 6000 students currently attend Sapporo University.

The Hokkaido region is well-known for it’s dramatic and unspoiled scenery that includes active volcanoes, large lakes and vast virgin forests. Within Hokkaido, the capital city of Sapporo is known for its unique history, striking natural beauty, and relaxed character. Many attractions unique to Sapporo contribute to the popularity of this well-planned city.

In little over a century, Sapporo has grown into a lively modern city and is one of the main pillars of the nation’s economic prominence. With a population of 1.77 million, Sapporo is Japan’s fifth largest city.

Known for it’s dynamic cultural activities, Sapporo annually welcomes visitors to a wide range of cultural events, including the celebrated Pacific Music Festival. In 1972 the city was chosen as the venue for the first Winter Olympic Games held in Asia.

Spring i s a time of blossoms and rich greenery; fair weather from May through June leads into a comfortable summer climate that attracts visitors both from within Japan and abroad. Sapporo is often compared to the premier skiing spots in Switzerland and the world’s other “Winter Wonderlands.” With excellent conditions and facilities, ski enthusiasts visiting.

Sapporo head straight for the city’s nearby slopes. An international airport and convenient public transportation system make Sapporo’s many attractions accessible.

Duration
 
The exchange program lasts two semesters. The spring semester begins in April and ends in mid-December.
 
 
Type of Program
 
The exchange program is based on an agreement between Sapporo University and UNL that allows a reciprocal exchange of students. Exchange students pay regular instructional costs to their home institution and then swap places with the student from the host institution. The number of students selected to participate in the exchange varies from year to year and depends on the balance of the exchange.

Credits earned at Sapporo University are transferable to UNL through department validations. UNL students remain eligible for most scholarships and other forms of financial aid that they would normally receive.
 
 
Am I eligible to apply?
 
Any UNL undergraduate is eligible to participate in the program at Sapporo University. Students applying for the exchange program should demonstrate a genuine interest in Asian studies, languages, or international experience and must display a general interest in the program. Two semesters of previous language instruction are required. A placement exam on arrival in Japan will place students at the appropriate level of instruction.

When Should I apply?
 
The application deadline for the exchange program is November 15.
 
 
How much will it cost?
 
The two-semester exchange program costs about $7,676 for Nebraska residents and $17,950 for non residents (2007). This includes instructional costs and insurance. The estimate for the apartment rental is $600 per month. Transportation (about $1300), books, lunches and other personal expenses are not included in this estimate. Scholarships available for this program include a Kawasaki Travel Grant, and a TRI-CON scholarship. Financial aid can be applied.

Academics: Students should discuss general academic information about Sapporo and Asian studies with a faculty member of the Asian Studies Committee: Noriko Asato (Modern Languages), Peter Bleed (Anthropology), Parks Coble (History), Edward Nemeth (Educational Psychology), David Rapkin (Political Science), Richard Schmidt (HPER), Robert Stoddard (Geography), and Andrew Wedeman (Political Science). Students also should discuss study plans with their regular academic advisers.
